Askren Bros have what it takes to save Monday nights
Matt ThielJul 27, 2008
Unfortunately, the WWE is in worse shape than the Mizzou basketball program these days. But today I figured out what, for me at least, could save it. I was reading Mechelle Vopel's piece on the Askren bros in today's KC Star (solid read by the way) and I realized the Askren's are sitting on the perfect WWE gimmick.Ā

If you're familiar with the current state of pro wrestling you know that the tag team division has been in shambles for years. The Hardy Boys were good but I just never understood the panty hose on the arms thing. You'd probably have to go back to at least the late '90s to find a really good original tag team (I'm excluding the Rock 'N Sock Connection because the Rock and Foley were already established as singles guys).
But picture this: A pair of Olympian brothers with personalities similar to Kurt Angle. They both have stupid shaggy haircuts and ridiculous looking chins. Both very cocky. The older one has a tendency of inadvertently stealing the show from the younger one.
This doesn't sound like a decent gimmick to you? It's even set up perfectly for a Shawn Michaels-Marty Jannety-like breakup.Ā

What's the shelf life on the career of an Olympic wrestler anyway? The employment opportunities after the Olympics are over have to be sparse so why not sign a contract with Vince McMahon and give the whole sports entertainment thing a shot?Ā
If this happens I guarantee I'll be tuning back in every Monday.Ā
*Editor's note: A little over a year ago me and a few friends of mine went to Moe's in downtown Columbia one Friday night and we ran into Ben and some of his friends. My buddy Christoph and I actually tried to convince Askren to give pro wrestling a shot. He scoffed at the idea and said something about all of "those guys" being on steroids and pointed to Kurt Angle as an example. Christoph told him he could be a high flyer and Ben kinda shrugged his shoulders. He didn't say no.Ā
**Second editor's note: Please don't think I'm discounting what Ben is doing by linking him to professional wrestling. If you know me then you know that linking someone to the WWE, WWF, WCW or any other past or present pro wrestling organization is the ultimate compliment. Ben should be honored.
