MMA: Five Things I Learned From EliteXC:Unfinished Business
1. Jake Shields is the most talented fighter on the EliteXC roster.
Jake shields quickly and effectively submitted Nick Thompson on Saturday night proving that he is the most talented horse in the EliteXC stable. He is currently on a ten fight winning streak, his last five ending in the first round and shows no signs of slowing down. Unfortunately most of the talent at Welterweight lies in the UFC and Shields may have problems showcasing his talents. On a side note Shields opponent Nick Thompson does get the award for worst beard of all time.
2. Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante is someone to watch for in the future

The guy trains everyday with Anderson Silva and the Nogueria brothers, he has to be a beast. Hopefully once his contract is up with EliteXC his training partners and Manager Ed Soares will bring him into the UFC. Cavalcante was the man whom Silva trained with to get him ready for James Irvin. "Feijao" has very Good Muay Thai and is very solid on the ground. Hopefully after the destruction of his latest opponent Cavalcante will see some better competition and we will see what he can really do.
3. Sometimes you have to win twice
In one of the most entertaining fights of the night Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos beat submission specialist Shayna Baszler. In typical Chute Boxe fashion Santos pushed the pace from the get go and Baszler was gassed by the second round.
Thats when things got interesting. Santos was pouring on the pressure and dropped Baszler with a right hand against the fence. Baszler hits the canvas and Santos assumes the fight is over and runs to the opposite side of the cage to celebrate. She jumps atop the fence and celebrates what she thought was a dominate victory.
Steve Mazzagatti is standing in the middle of the cage just staring at Santos trying to tell her the fight isn't over. Santos jumps off the fence and finally she realizes the fight isn't over.
What I couldn't understand was why the ref was just standing there. Go get Santos and tell her the fight isn't over rather than yelling at her over the crowd giving her your "stupid" look.
It didn't matter as Santos came back and finished Baszler off quickly winning with a nasty KO.
4. Dear Mr. Lawler, please don't dance
Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith stepped into the cage to finish their business from the first fight that was stopped due to a eye poke. Smith cut Lawler again with an elbow then waited for the ref to step in and stop the fight. While he became complacent Lawler was aggressive pushed Smith against the fence and pummelled him. Lawler finished Smith off and then it all went down hill. I guess you could call it dancing, but it wasn't pretty. I understand celebrating a victory, jump on the cage, wave to the fans, do anything except for that. It just seemed to make everything kind of look silly. Smith made up for the moment in his after fight interview. He told his kids even though he didn't win that they were still going to Disney Land. Thanks for not crushing your kids dreams on national television Scott, we appreciate it.
5. Bigfoot Silva deserves to be the Heavyweight champ.
"Bigfoot" Silva was crowned the first Heavyweight champ after his total domination of Justin Eilers. Silva looked fantastic and it is going to be a lot of fun to watch this guy develop and defend his belt. The Heavyweight division isn't particularly deep but there are a few match-ups that may prove to be interesting. Other than Kimbo Slice, they have Dave Herman and Brett Rogers. I'm glad that they gave Silva the opportunity to win the belt and it will be interesting to see who will get the first shot at the big man.
Honorable mention: Goes to Frank Shamrock, are those braces or bling Frank?
