Floyd Mayweather Jr Questions Manny Pacquiao's BWAA Fighter of the Decade Award
Undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr is questioning the 2010 "Fighter of the Decade" award recently given to Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA).
Mayweather, who is currently the second richest athlete in the world, said he should be recognized as the world's greatest boxer, dismissing the exploits of Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali, who were known boxing legends during their time.
Tiger Woods is this year's richest athlete with total earnings of $105 million, according to Forbes' list of 100 richest celebrities.
The boxer formerly known as "Pretty Boy Floyd" was talking about his own exploits, being undefeated in his 41 professional fights.
Pacquiao, who got the 2010 twin boxing awards from BWAA, has lost three times in his professional boxing career.
Justifying his claim to the BWAA awards, Mayweather said:
โPacquiao struggled twiceโwhich we really know he got beatโwith (Juan Manuel) Marquez,โ he went on.
โWe know he really lost, right? And we know heโs been knocked out twice. And heโs been outboxed by Erik Morales but they still gave him Boxer of the Decade so thatโs something I donโt understand. Weโre talking about what these guys are doing but Iโve been dominating since the โ90s. Thatโs what Iโve been doing.โ
ABS-CBN News reports: Mayweather may be creating hype for his expected showdown with Pacquiao in November although nothing is certain about the much-awaited fight.
Representatives from both camps are reportedly conferring to agree on terms that will make the bout a reality. Revenue splits and drug-testing are the main issues which need to be resolved before Pacquiao and Mayweather are good to go.
It was earlier reported that Pacquiao is flying to the US on July 1, reportedly to meet with Bob Arum for the final decision on the proposed Mayweather-Pacquiao fight which according to Bob Arum is the fight that the world wants to see.
Mayweather and Pacquiao could make at least $40 million each if they finally decide to slug it out before the end of the year.
Meanwhile Manny Pacquiao, who was just sworn in as congressman of the Sarangani province in the Philippines, said he will be attending the inauguration of the Philippine president-elect Noynoy Aquino at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila this morning, along with foreign dignitaries and heads of state of some ASEAN countries.
