Arsenal's Great Expectations

Stefan VasilevJul 25, 2008

As the season nears the expectations for yet another successful year as the not-so-long ago previous ones, begin to arise again. As we all watch how the transfer’s saga unfolds again we all have our hopes that this year will be different from the last one. The signing of yet more young players state the intentions of Mr. Wenger to abstain from spending big. But can he cope with the teams that spend big on already proven players?

In my opinion he can. But for that Arsene Wenger needs to add depth to the team. With three Arsenal players who have already left the team- Flamini, Hleb, Gilberto- more experience is lost and Wenger will further look to replace them. He has already said he will add one or two more experienced players until the end of the transfer market.

The last season Arsenal did pretty well ,finishing with 84 points. That on a normal season would be enough to seal the EPL title. But what was missing in Wenger’s side was depth. The injuries took their toll and Arsenal could not cope to maintain their form and were overtaken by Manchester United. What the side needs is to keep their players and maybe add two or three more players with experience to add the much needed depth in order to compete with the rivals.

This pre-season situation is 2 to 3. Two players in, and three out. Now how can depth be added this way? Wenger will need  this season to be free of injuries to succeed.

Another thing to think about is the missing competent leadership on the field. Gallas is a good captain ,adding experience to the squad but at difficult times his qualities have been proven to be insufficient. Fabregas is looking like a capable leader for the team but he needs another year or two to develop into one. So Wenger needs to work this out to improve the chances of the team to win the EPL.

With the arrivals of Samir Nasri from Marseille and Aaron Ramsey from Cardiff city, Arsene has sealed the services of two young players again. No doubt they have tremendous potential but they will need time to develop. The questions is can Wenger keep the team together in order for these two and all the other young players in the squad  to develop into world-class players? Only time will tell.

As for this season Arsenal has a bright future and its supporters are full of hope. In my opinion the team has the needed potential to lift the EPL title if the season is not overrun with injuries . One way to solve the problems of the squad is to sign new players which of course is restricted by the club’s financial situation. As the tension before the start of the season builds up, the supporters of Arsenal are left with yet another feeling of hope and anxiety to see how their favourite team would perform.
