XM Satellite Radio's Voice of NASCAR To Eat Dirt?

Mary Jo BuchananJul 25, 2008

The XM Satellite Radio voice of NASCAR, Claire B. Lang, announced that she would eat dirt - yes, eat dirt - if Tony Stewart or anyone from Indiana wins at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this Sunday.  Why on earth would Claire B. decide to go down the path of dirt eating?   It seems that she and young gun Landon Cassill, who was on her show this week, had a very animated discussion about "home field" advantage for Indiana favorite sons.  Landon argued that certain Indiana bred drivers may want to kiss the bricks more than other "out of town" drivers.  Claire B.'s assertion was that any of the 43 drivers in the field this weekend would die to win the Brickyard and that there was no home town advantage.  But Landon stuck to his guns, arguing that racing in your home town was a huge advantage for any driver and provided that extra bit of motivation.

So, the assertion by Claire B. that she would just have to eat dirt if an Indiana driver won pretty much fell out of her mouth.  And Landon Cassill couldn't get enough of it.  Like the young man he is - kid really - he found this hysterically funny and just would not let it go.

Since Landon was having so much fun with it all, Claire B. decided she wasn't going to let it go either.  After the interview with Landon, she decided to interview many of the other drivers in the garage, asking them if they wanted to win the Brickyard more than someone like Tony Stewart, who was born and raised in Indiana.  Matt Kenseth's response was classic, saying if he did not want to win the race this weekend, he should just "pack up and go home".  But when asked the same question, Brian Vickers acknowledged that there was that little bit of extra pride and urge to win when racing at a "home" track or a "special" track like Indy or Daytona.

So, is there home field advantage?  And will Claire B. Lang really have to eat dirt?  Stay tuned - the driver that is kissing the bricks on Sunday will be the determining factor.  And Claire B., if it is Tony Stewart, would you like an order of fries with that dirt?
