Have Politics Caused UFC Fighter Chael Sonnen To Lose His Mind?
Chael Sonnen has been successful with his venture into the world of politics so far, but it may be affecting his reasoning skills more and more each day.
Sonnen has been quite vocal in his dislike for current UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, and he continually throws verbal jabs at Silva through the media. It's one thing for a fighter to trash talk his opponent—that's a pretty normal happening in MMA—but Sonnen has now taken it a step further: He is now attacking Silva's manager, Ed Soares.
Last night, Sonnen posted the following on his Twitter account:
"Ed, pray to whatever Demon effigy you prance and dance in front of with your piglet tribe of savages that I decide not to CRUCIFY you."
This was the third time in a week that Sonnen made reference to Silva or someone associated with him.
On May 26, Sonnen promised Silva he would be on his back in their match more than "a pornstar with a mortgage." That was followed up on May 30, with Sonnen beginning a countdown to their fight, and how Silva's days as champion may be numbered.
Obviously, trash talk was at an all-time high for this past weekend's matchup of Rashad Evans and Rampage Jackson at UFC 114, but Sonnen seems intent on setting a new standard for bashing an opponent.
Silva, however, has continually refused to take part in any verbal war.
While few may give Sonnen a chance against Silva, he may have zero chance once the fight begins. Silva has come into his last few matches unmotivated and uninspired, but The Spider may now be facing a man who may force him to become the Silva of old.
Or, is this all an elaborate scheme to throw the champion off his game? The questions will be answered at UFC 117 in August, but until then, Chael Sonnen will make it well known to anyone that will listen that he is the one to dethrone the champion.
