"Charlie Weis is a fat, stubborn coach who has done more harm than good for the Irish."
How many times, as ND fans, have we heard or read something like this? It gets pointless to defend Weis against "fans" of any collegiate football team.
Fact is, Charlie Weis came in with players from Ty Willingham's Irish and turned them into a phenomenal football team. Records were broken, great games were played, and the bandwagon was full of Notre Dame's "No. 1 fan."
Then Ty's complete lack of recruiting took its toll. With less than a handful of upperclassmen, Notre Dame had an absolutely atrocious season. The bandwagon emptied back out.
Good. Go. Stay out. You are no longer welcome here.
Charlie Weis is making a team that will do what college football teams need to do—win championships.
The offense he is creating has more stars than the Milky Way. With offensive linemen Zach Martin, Chris Watt, and Alex Bullard, all four or five-star recruits, and Xavier Nixon and Anthony Lalota still in the mix, Coach Weis is addressing the biggest issue of the 3-9 season.
He already has Dayne Crist, a stud five-star QB out of California, and five-star WR Michael Floyd, and now adds RB Cierre Wood, the best running back coming out in 2009. Also on offense, TEs Tyler Eifert and Jake Golic, and four-star RB Theo Giddick have committed. That is an offense that will put points on the board.
Jon Tenuta is a defensive genius, and defensive coordinator Corwyn Brown has brought the shutdown 3-4 to the team. With DT Tyler Stockton in the center, it should run okay. He will be joined by LBs David Posluszny, Dan Fox, and Carlo Calabrese, with outstanding CB Marlon Pollard.
Also, CB Darrin Walls should be returning next year, to be joined by Gary Gray, Jamoris Slaughter, and Robert Blanton.
With a strong defensive line—which Weis & Co. should be able to focus on after one more tall receiver and another stud OL—there is no position on the field where we will be hurting.
Almost everyone I mentioned is recruited for next year, and it is not even recruiting season yet. That is what the "fat, stubborn coach" has brought to this team.
So again, to all of the Weis-haters who have been calling for his head, and all of the other teams' fans—I hope you got your licks in, because a reign of tyranny is coming. The dynasty that is Notre Dame football is coming, and it will be released no later than 2010.
Coach Weis already has a decent team, and he will show you what he can do with players that he coached, not hand-me-downs from Ty Willingham, the LAZIEST coach in CFB.
Irish fans everywhere, drink the Kool-Aid: It tastes delicious.

Yeah, blame it all on Ty. Lots of superlatives not many qualifiers or facts.
from 2 months ago
Fact - Ty Willingham went golfing during the recruiting season and gave us the second worst class in school history. Fact - Ty Willingham recruited zero offensive linemen in 2004. Fact - Ty Willingham saw the writing on the wall and stopped recruiting week 3 altogether. Fact - You made that statement as a ND hater who has not researched before he replied. Nice use of the word superlatives, though. I, too, have word of the day toilet paper. Look at the amount of seniors and 5th year seniors on Notre Dame in 2007, do the math to realize that they were all that was left of ol' Ty Willy, and then retract previous statement. Thanks for playing!
Fact: many schools have done better with less. It's not ALL Ty Willingham.
from 2 months ago
Really? With the same or less upper-classmen headcount against the 2007 SOS? Who? When?
from 2 months ago
Yes this is true but those teams have some differences.
1 - Those are schools that build up to make a run and then go down for a couple of years. There are 15 POWER programs that are expected to be good EVERY year. 15-45 make a run every couple of years. This falls in line when they have experienced teams that have played together for a while.
2- Those schools do not come close to playing the schedule that ND does on a regular basis. I love when a MAC school makes a run or a bottom feeder in a BCS school make a run like Kansas last year. But it has a LOT to do with the schedule and not just coaching up kids.
The TY argument IS old...I agree. The day to settle the score once and for all is Oct 25th.

Math lesson:
11 offensive positions X 5 stars = 55 star offense.
Life lesson:
Jon Tenuta never had the quality of player/recruit that he does now. He made Philip Wheeler look All-world. He now has several decent recruiting classes... Wonder how that's gonna turn out?
Final lesson:
Good recruiting + good coaching = wins. Don't preach, man. You're always going to get the haters. ND football is a polarizing topic no matter what. If you want to see the Ty perspective, go look at a UW message board. They just love Lionel, right?
Superlatives, fact, qualifiers... whatever. If the "molder of men" had a shred of coaching acumen why did NFL players like Zbikowski, and Stovall underperform or just not even play in his wonderful system?

ABSOLUTELY 2007 was not all Typhool's fault.
1. CW needs to learn how to make better field position decisions within games. He made the same go / no go decisions in 2007 as in 2005. The 2007 squad was not half of what the 2005 squad was. He placed WAY too much burden, IMO, on youngsters and the Defense last year. His DC was in his first year EVER as a DC and he constantly / consistently put Corwin's unit in poor field position. That is stupid as a HC. CW was making field position decisions as a OC and not as a HC, IMO.
Ty was a disaster recruiter over the three cycles he participated in at ND. Anyone who says otherwise does not understand football or has an agenda. The 4/5 th year seniors in 2007 numbered...what, seven? Seven? Who could coach around that?
As poor as the upper-class numbers were in 2007, CW amplified the potential doom bourne of a lazy recruiter and naive AD with POOR game day decisions.
Discuss.

I disagree. I see what you're saying as far as classes of 2005 vice 2007. However, I believe Weis saw what was coming. No Notre Dame fan I associate with saw a NC coming our way, nor a major bowl. A friend of mine who I consider a resident expert said 5-7 (none of us predicted losses to Navy or Air Force). So, CW decided to go with trial by fire. Especially after 0-4. The season was basically a write-off, so teach these kids what to expect. You cannot teach Clausen what it feels like to get the dirty jersey, he needs to get it. You cannot tell Armando Allen how it feels to get laid out by a LB like PSU's Connor, so run him up the gut. As far as pressure goes, none of the kids, and that's what most of them were, have felt real pressure before, so let them feel it. That cannot be taught, and that is why I feel CW ran his team the way he is going to always run his team.
Also, CW did not have the hand in field position, poor special teams and the complete lack of offensive production had a major role in that factor. When you cannot kick from the 25-yard line, an issue he has already addressed for next year, you have to go for it on 4th and 8, a lesson even Brady Quinn and his squad had to learn.

The distaster that was the 2007 was not all Tyrone Willingham's fault...but he certainly didn't help.
It was the culmination of many things, some within Weis' control, others not.
The roster was bottom loaded, leaving a void of experience and leadership. The 2007 schedule was difficult and frontloaded with good defensive football teams. Most of the season saw a TRUE (not redshirt) freshman quarterback. And there were three first time starters on the offensive line. There was youth and inexperience at many critical skill positions.
None of that was in Weis' control.
However, he went out and exacerbated the problem by trying to install a new offense, overloading the young players and causing them to think rather than react. He handled the quarterback competition extremely poorly. And he didn't play to the strength of the team which was running the football.
If you want good cause to be concerned, consider the fact that Weis didn't see the plethora of weaknesses going into the season and try to mask them.
I'm as ardent a Notre Dame fan as any, but let's show up on the field before making national championship predictions. There is ample evidence to indicate Weis is a good, maybe even great coach. But the 2007 season is still cause for concern.

Blame aside, how will a team that doesn't have a winning percentage last year going to win a National Championship within three years? Do you understand that turn around? It's not likely. The University of Miami has a better chance at a NC than Notre Dame.
Everyone of the top flight schools brings in talent at all positions.
Recruits don't mean anything until they fax in that letter. Even then it doesn't mean that they will be eligible or come close to their hype.

USC 1998-2000 (overall 19-18). Enter: Pete Carroll (first year 6-6, now overall 76-14 with two NCs, his first in his 4th year *coincidentally, CW is in his 4th year*). As much as I hate to say it. So, I am now done arguing with people who do absolutely no research before making a poor argument, and possibly done defending my team to those who have no idea what it means to build a dynasty.
When you can tell me about your team's SOS, depth chart past the 3rd WR, and recruiting commits, visits, offers, etc. then, and only then, can you say things like Miami has a better chance than ND. We'll talk more after the next Catholics vs. Criminals game.
Lastly, a five-star is the best at his position in HS, so, yes, they may not live up to their hype, but if we have all four and five star recruits and half pan out, then we still have all four or five star players on the field. Good luck on your next argument, maybe next time you'll talk to someone that will say "you are a brilliant sports analyst, and proved valid points throughout your entire article/comment/reply". Today, you have no such luck.

Pete Carroll is an example. He's the exception to the rule. Miami isn't my team, but I will be willing to bet they improve faster than ND. I know your homerism distorts your view of real life, so for that, I'm sorry.
Hmmm, my team's third WR and down...you mean Riley Cooper who also plays baseball, Carl Moore who is a JUCO transfer (#1 JUCO transfer), and Deonte Thompson? You mean my team's SOS which normal ranks in the top 10. You mean my team that's won a National Championship this decade? You mean my team that's head coach spurned your team and that's the reason why you are stuck with Charlie Weis?

thats neat you have a 2-sport athlete. super relevent too. Florida has been kinda tight lately, i'm not gonna bash that...but i believe the article was saying we'd have a great shot for the NC by 2010 -
bla - these threads always end the same....blabla, you suck, charlie sucks, blabla - whatevs man, i'm sure it'd be tight to have gone to school there for the last decade or some shit....keep in mind, times change, hence the fact that UF has only 2 NC's, you know where i'm going with this but i'll stop bc the line is played out....i know nobody gives a F about how many NC's or Heisman's....blabla. these threads are pointless....just funny how all these people that hate Notre Dame cant live w/o reading about them. I never go read UF boards, or go flame USC boards . . . if ya dont like the Irish, cool man, i respectfully tell you to shut the fuck up and go read a different article then.

Now that I have learned your actual school, allow me first to apologize. Miami fans, do not know anything. So I was prejudice against you, most SEC fans are decent. However, you set yourself up for failure in one category. OF COURSE YOU SAID RECRUITS DON'T MEAN ANYTHING UNTIL THEY FAX IN THAT LETTER!!! Urban Meyer is the most despicable recruiter on the planet. It's like he just sits there and waits until he sees what top schools are going after who, and flat and out lies to them so they go to UF. Omar Hunter, take him you dirty thieves. I could write ten articles about this man. Unfortunately for me, you have your NC and a Heisman to wave around, I'd use it if I could.
Aso, I said that we should have one in 2010, not next year. I'm a realist. So I gave you yours, you gave me mine, but seriously, Urban Liar, you gotta admit...

Josh, thanks for stepping in and putting me in my place. If you look at my orginal post, there was no malice, just a few appropriate questions. Sorry I didn't sugar coat with how great Notre Dame was...not is. Notre Dame used to win National Championship is equal to Edmon used to ride big wheels. While both happened a long time ago, neither have done it in a long time.
For you, you might want to learn the difference between a College Football Forum and a Notre Dame Football Forum. But for a guy who throws the f bomb to show how tough he is on the internet, I'd expect you not to know the difference.
from 2 months ago
Irish, I can honestly understand why you wouldn't like him. He chose Florida over Notre Dame and then "stole" recruits from you. That's just the game is played. I'm sure Notre Dame never took a commit from another school. They are way above that. It's a part of the game.
from 2 months ago
His wife made the choice to go to UF, not him. Also, of course every other school does it, just not as badly as he does, I could site examples if you need me to, but you seem like you know enough to know which ones I'm talking about.
from 2 months ago
I'm very aware. Florida year in and year out takes a few and loses a few. The teams that lose the players take it a little too personal. It's not a commitment until they turn in that paper signed. It's just part of college football.
