Scared of Pacquiao or Not, Mayweather's Silence Is Unusual and More Scary
It has been a week since Pacquiao gave his consent for a 14-day window for random drug and urine tests but Mayweather is taking his time to return the ball to the political neophyte's court. A Philstar.com report quoting The Examiner says:
""But an article came out of The Examiner yesterday reminding everyone that Mayweather, the flamboyant, undefeated American, wants the blood tests done as he had always wanted, on the days closer to the fight"."
"โI gave him (Pacquiao) a chance, up to 14 days out. But my new terms are all the way up to the fight. They can come get us whenever, all the way up to the fight, random drug test. Thatโs what it is,โ Mayweather was quoted as saying"."
In the news article Mayweather reportedly said: "My new terms are all the way up to the fight". Critics have questioned the authenticity of the statement saying it was quoted from an unreliable source.
If indeed Mayweather did not make the statement, the least his spokesman could have done was to confirm or deny the statement.
News and opinion writers have anchored their views on the reported statement by Mayweather in response to Pacquiao's announcement which he confirmed on print and broadcast media.
In fairness to Mayweather, he should not be on the receiving end of angry reactions, sometimes uncivilized comments from boxing fans about his endless demands from the Filipino boxer if he did not utter those statements.
Again there was a report that Mayweather is now asking for a bigger chunk of the prize money which was already discussed and agreed by both parties days before the failed Pacquiao-Mayweather match last March 13. The agreement was 50:50 with Mayweather getting the top billing.
mb.com.ph reports:
""There were reports the other day that Mayweather wants to get the chunkier piece of the pie when he collides with Filipino sporting icon Manny Pacquiao. Though Mayweather hasnโt responded directly to the 14-day cutoff period , he has made it known to key Pacquiao people that he is not inclined to a 50-50- revenue split"."
Still, Arum has made it clear that Mayweatherโs people have been properly informed about the 14-day window and that the ball is now in their court, the report added.
Since he gave his consent on the 14-day window for random blood test, Pacquiao has already shot some commercials for TV ads, got sick and confined in a hospital and discharged Tuesday. Still Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum says he "hasn't heard a word" from Mayweather camp.
Unless Mayweather confirms or denies the statement attributed to him, he will continue to be at the receiving end of unsavory comments from boxing fans.
