Danica Patrick vs. Milka Duno vs. Chrissy Wallace: Female Racers or Fighters?

Mary Jo BuchananJul 21, 2008

What are our young ladies of racing up to these days?  It seems like they are garnering more attention from their fighting spirits off the track than on the track.

YouTube has captured the latest incident between Danica Patrick and Milka Duno, throwing cross words, barbs, and even towels at each other after the most recent Indy car race.

In the world of NASCAR, our most promising female driver, Chrissy Wallace, seems to be in fighting mode as well, furious over having been taken out of the most recent truck race in a very hard hit.

So, should our role models to all future women drivers be lowering themselves to such antics?  Some fans would say that they should be doing exactly that.

Racing isn’t easy and only the tough survive.  The belief is that every racer has to prove themselves and the shoving, pushing, and even punching is just all part of showing you’ve got what it takes to make it to the top.

So, the women need to stand up for themselves, even if that means getting a little physical with the competition.

This is definitely true in the open wheel racing circuit, where competition is fierce.  Initially, Danica Patrick was “packaged” as that beautiful, sexy woman who just happens to be a racecar driver.

But she is much more, and she most certainly has a drive and spirit about her that doesn’t put up with much of anything from anybody.  She can get feisty and even take a swing at one of the male drivers to prove her point when warranted.

Although NASCAR does not have a female at the top level as in Indy car racing, Chrissy Wallace in the Craftsman Truck series has garnered some attention this weekend for her ire.

She has the spunk and the pedigree and now just needs the seat time and racing experience to catapult her career to the next level.

But she can hold her own as well—let’s face it, she’d have to in order to put up with cousin Steven Wallace’s antics on and off the track, from blowing up a toilet at his own house to wrecking Chrissy’s father Mike in a recent Nationwide race.  She has proven this past weekend that she too can take it to the “big boys” when needed.

But the question still remains:  Is this really what our girls need to do to show that they are as tough as the boys and can excel in their respective racing series?  The jury may still be out on that one. But it most certainly makes for added drama in both of these racing worlds.  And only time will tell if these particular young women really can fight their way to the top!
