Matt Kobyluk Takes Checkered Flag at Music City Motorplex
While the NASCAR Cup drivers were on hiatus this weekend, the Camping World East Series drivers were running full force at the Music City Motorplex in Nashville, Tennessee.
28 cars showed up for 30 starting places in the Saturday night race, including a number of part-time drivers like Rich Gould from southern New Jersey. Sterling Marlin was also at the track, adding to the status of the event.
The night belonged, however, to none other than six foot, five inch Matt Kobyluk.
This was a hard-fought battle, as Kobyluk had to rebound from a right front tire issue. In his No. 40 Mohegan Sun sponsored car, Kobyluk then stayed in the front of the pack, battling with Trevor Bayne, winner of last week's race, and Peyton Sellers to the end of the 150 lap race.
Kobyluk prevailed, taking his Mohegan Tribe, his loyal team, and his family into victory lane once again.
The race was also a good one for Andy Santerre Motorsports, with their lone driver, Peyton Sellers, coming in second. Sellers knew this would be a good weekend since he started on the pole.
One of Santerre’s other protégés, Austin Dillon (who happens to be Richard Childress’ grandson) came in third with his new family team.
Another of Santerre’s former drivers, Jeffrey Earnhardt, racing now for DEI, started the race on the outside pole. He did not fare well in the race, however, as he brought out the sixth caution on Lap 120, spinning high in turn one and then taking a hard left behind the wall.
Earnhardt, son of Kerry Earnhardt and grandson of Dale Earnhardt, Sr., returned to the track and finished in the 19th position.
Other notables in this Camping World East contest included motorcycle great Ricky Carmichael, who had an exceptional race and finished fourth. Former NASCAR Cup driver Steve Park also had a good night, coming in sixth place.
It would not be a Camping World East race without a little drama as well. Several cars got into a heated battle on Lap 28 and the No. 03 driver, Rogelio Lopez, and his crew chief were invited to the NASCAR hauler after the race.
All in all, the Strutmasters.com 150 at the Music City Motorplex brought the competition for the Camping World East Series even closer, especially for Matt Kobyluk, and that is music to his ears!
