All American Anarchy: The Great American Bash Preview

Ron JohnsonJul 20, 2008

While everyone is doing predictions over The Great American Bash, I'm just following suit and giving previews of tonight's unprecedented pay per view. Many call it the most predictable pay-per-view of the year...but there are outside sources that will tell you otherwise.

With that said, here's the rundown of tonight's Great American Bash!

United States Championship

Matt Hardy vs. Shelton Benjamin

As reported yesterday on the Bleacher Report, Matt Hardy will defend the US Championship against the man who beat him two weeks ago in a non-title match: Shelton Benjamin.

Since acquiring his new persona as The Gold Standard, Benjamin has been almost unstoppable. After coming up short in the Fatal Fourth Match, Benjamin is now determined to bring some gold back to SmackDown!

On the other side of the ring is the man who has been on a serious roll since beating MVP for the gold at Backlash. Matt Hardy got drafted to ECW and took the United States Championship with him.

In a strange twist, Hardy has several contenders for the championship, but Benjamin has to be his biggest challenge to date.

WWE Divas Championship

Natalya vs. Michelle McCool

The fiery Canadian redhead has been on a mission to get gold around her pretty little waist since earning her spot in the first ever Divas Championship match. After several weeks of uncertainty, she now has a time and a place where her hard work will pay off.

But her opponent won't be the only one she's trying to impress. There is also the matter of the war between her and RAW's Beth Phoenix.

Michelle is one of the Divas that has been with SmackDown! her entire career. Now she has a chance to win her first championship in the WWE when she faces her rival tonight for the Divas Championship.

And considering the mood that SmackDown!'s GM will most likely be in tonight, it's better to try to win it tonight and get out of Dodge before she changes the rules again.

In this match, there will be the spectre of Beth Phoenix, and the two will most likely lock horns before this is all said and done.

Fatal Four Way for the WWE Tag Team Championships

Ever since winning the gold last November from Matt Hardy and MVP, Miz and John Morrison have done anything and everything to keep the gold in the Palace of Wisdom. Tonight, that might not be enough.

The Champions have not one, not two, but three teams gunning for their tag team titles tonight. From ECW, they have the tag team they haven't been able to shake off since Night of Champions, Finswoggle.

From SmackDown!, they got a pair of tag teams grabbing their first legitimate shots at tag team gold: Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder of La Familia and Jesse & Festus of Biscuits and Gravy Express.

With three teams gunning for the gold currently held by ECW's Dirt Sheet, the boys from SmackDown! wouldn't mind bringing the titles back home to a detested GM.

As for Finlay and Hornswoggle, they came close last time. They don't want to come close again.

Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho

Chris Jericho has been a man possessed on making HBK's life a living hell ever since the fake knee injury at Backlash. Jericho went as far as smashing Michaels' head through a television screen. Now Y2J is out to save himself from everyone who still cheers for Michaels and boos Jericho.

Since losing partial vision in his eye, the Showstopper has been more of a thorn in Jericho's side as usual. From costing him the Intercontinental Championship at Night of Champions to assaulting Jericho last Monday night on RAW, Michaels agreed to one thing that Y2J said: "The worst is yet to come."

ECW Championship

Mark Henry vs. Tommy Dreamer

Ever since beating Big Show and Kane at Night of Champions, Mark Henry has been an egotistical champion. Claiming to be unbeatable and unstoppable, the World's Strongest Man now has some backup to that claim: WWE Hall of Famer Tony Atlas.

Since then, no one has been able to even stagger the Champion...until now.

Tonight, the newest member of ECW faces one of the most well known ECW Originals in Tommy Dreamer. Since winning the championship, Henry's biggest challenger has been Dreamer.

Now Dreamer has a chance to win his first ECW Championship since the resurrection, and after dropping the champion with frying pan last week, don't be surprised if this is the upset of the night.

New York City Parking Lot Brawl

John Cena vs. JBL

Ever since losing to Cena at Wrestlemania, JBL has done anything and everything to make Cena's life a living hell. For most people, this feud is losing its luster.

In my opinion, this is the perfect ending to arguably one of the best rivalries in recent memory. JBL declared Martial Law after the Chairman was shelved due to injury. Ever since then, Layfield may have regretted trying to be the Chairman.

After getting tossed out by JBL's personal security, John Cena has been the anti-Martial of RAW. From recruiting Cryme Tyme to do some extracurricular work on JBL's prized limo to almost getting beheaded at the ending to RAW, Cena has been a man possessed.

Here's one quick DYK: The last Parking Lot Brawl in WWE history was Eddie Guerrero vs. ironically enough John Cena.

World Heavyweight Championship

CM Punk vs. Batista

It was one of the biggest moments in RAW history. For the first time since the MitB was used, CM Punk cashed it in on RAW and defeated Edge to become the new World Heavyweight Champion.

One of the most underrated Champions in history, Punk has been out to prove himself ever since. This Sunday, he faces the toughest challenge in his reign.

Punk won the World Title from Edge thanks to a fuming Animal who unleashed his aggression on the Rated R Superstar during Edge's "visit" to RAW the night after Night of Champions.

After defeating JBL, Cena and Kane in a Fatal Four Way, the Animal is now on a mission to win back the World Championship. At the Bash, both men have a chance to prove something not just to everyone else, but also to themselves.

WWE Championship

Triple H vs. Edge

After surviving John Cena at Night of Champions, Triple H went to SmackDown! to enjoy the victory over a great opponent. Instead, he was informed by GM Vickie Guerrero that he would face Edge at The Bash for the WWE Championship.

Here's the problem: If she knew what Triple H knew, she would have never given Edge the opportunity at the Championship.

The Rated R Superstar has blamed everyone except himself for losing the World Heavyweight Championship to Punk. For the past few weeks, Edge has tried anything and everything to get and advantage heading into the GAB.

Unfortunately, Edge didn't plan on Triple H dropping a bombshell on his wedding night that may have cost him his chance to become Champion.

After Vickie Guerrero found out about his affair with the wedding planner, how will this affect the match tonight when the Ultimate Opportunist faces The King of Kings for the WWE Championship?

Even bigger, will the McMahons unveil their plan of consequence to the members of RAW tonight?

Tune in tonight as Long Island (aka Foley Country) plays host to The Great American Bash!
