Pacquiao Goes The Distance, Defeats Chongbian By TKO

Jo-Ryan SalazarMay 10, 2010

In what has to go down as his biggest victory since the one-sided victory over Joshua Clottey at Cowboys Stadium, Manny Pacquiao earned a technical knockout over Roy "The Chosen One" Chongbian in one of the longest fights of the Pac-Man's career.

General Santos City, the capital of Sarangani Province, celebrated into the night as the People's Champ Movement, under the auspices of the Nacionalista Party, delivered a decisive uppercut to the Lakas-Kampi-CMD candidate. It was enough to sway the over 100,000 judges in to favor Pacquiao unanimously.

"We knew that [Chongbian]'s chin was not all it was cracked up to be," said Freddie Roach, Team Pacquiao's trainer. "Knowing his tendencies, he was open for a landing with the right fist."

The bookmakers at Las Vegas had Pacquiao winning the battle narrowly, save for Bodog.com, who had Pacquiao winning by at least 50,000 and the over/under set at 110,000.

News of the outcome was met with indifference in Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s camp.

"I don't care if he gets himself involved into politics," Mayweather said, fresh off a victory over Shane Mosley earlier this year. "If he wants to face me, he just needs to accept the blood tests. No questions asked.

"Given that he is a congressman now, I am confident that we won't have a problem convincing him to change his mind."

Chongbian was able to land some punches to Pacquiao in the form of broken down voting machines and his patented "Long Queue Line Left Jab" attack, but in the end it was nothing more than a scratch.

"He was too quick for me," Chongbian said after the bout. "Because of this, I decided to concede. Manny is just too much."

In Manila, NP leader Manny Villar-who conceded the Presidential race to Benigno Aquino III-was smug, saying, "I may have lost the race, but Pacquiao finished it, and that's what matters."

Chongbian's trainer was unavailable for comment.
