Is A Renewed Sense of Competition Driving Greg Norman?

J. Michael MorrisJul 18, 2008

Vintner, golf course designer, world's largest private yacht builder, luxury lifestyle entrepreneur, and once again, professional golfer Greg Norman is leading the British Open Championship coming into Sunday at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England. No, this isn't the Senior Open, that's next week and he's playing there too. I have personally given 3 to 1 odds that he beats David Duval and Jean van de Velde's best ball tomorrow.

As a past champion of the event he has a standing invite until he is too old to chew his own food. Maybe his last exemptions available until this performance. He skipped The Open Championship last year and generally only plays a handful of professional golf tournaments worldwide in any given year. One game that he is apparently still playing is the world's oldest game, the game of love.

So what is Norman even doing at the Open Championship this year? Maybe trying to make back some of the $104 million dollars he recently lost in divorce court to his ex-wife. Greg Norman has logged almost $14 million in tournament winnings during his hall of fame career on the links. Sort of a waste of time I guess.

Reportedly, last summer he had reportedly begun a very civil and mutual divorce proceeding until his wife found out that he bought a house in the city near his girlfriend and photos of the two together surfaced in tabloids.  Isn't this sorta like trying to hit driver from the fairway on Pebble Beach's 18th when you're leading the tournament by a shot. Settle down already, it's in the bag if you just make par.

The Great White Shark may be past his prime competing at golf, but apparently not for other fish in the sea of love (I have more). He has recently been married to the "other woman" who is Professional Tennis hall of famer Chris Everett. Chrissy even stated on Saturday to Judy Rankin that she has been following Greg to tournaments for two years.

They have actually been engaged since last December, shortly after Chrissy divorced her professional skier second husband. The two couples are/were good friends and used to "vacation" together. Closed circuit private ginormous yacht security camera film footage not available on YouTube.

Greg has been incredibly successful with almost every endeavor he has attempted. Stands to reason that he would fall into classic mid-life crisis mode with his golf game. I'm sure he already has a red convertible and he doesn't need hair plugs on that luxurious bouffant-ish head.

So how does he prove his virility to his new spouse? I mean besides paying $104 million to lose the old one. He wins a major championship at 53.

Don't you think Chris Everett would like to see her new big, strong, fabulously tanned, uberwealthy husband show those young white belt and hip-hugger wearing whippersnappers what for.

Maybe he is serious about returning to professional golf. I guarantee The Shark's insatiable ego still believes he can still compete and  isn't that what all the other players are missing? Why shouldn't he, it isn't a contact sport. Most golf fans think he quit trying way too early in his career anyway and he's in much better shape than Kenny Perry. Just ask Chris.
