Here is my preseason college football preseason top 25 for 2010. This is an extremely early prediction but this is my best as of now.
These rankings will change throughout the season and the actual top 25 at the end of 2010 could be radically different but here is my opinion.
-Alabama-The defending national champions will be the main force behind the SEC this season. They will have defending Heisman trophy winner Mark Ingram coming back to defend his trophy as well.
-Ohio State-Another perennial power that will be a national title contender this season. The main reason why I have Ohio State so high is simply coaching and returning players. Jim Tressel is an excellent coach.
-Miami –People will say I am nuts but the Hurricanes have all of the talent in world. They now have a more experienced team and more experienced coaching. This is the year they need to put everything together. I think they should win the ACC but national title won’t be until 2011. It is put up or shut this season.
-Boise State-All of their starters but one is returning from a #4 ranked BCS winning team. The Broncos year after year contend for BCS bowl games and top 5 rankings. This could be the year that they make the national title game if they can beat Virginia Tech.
-Florida-I have the Gators this high because of their talent and coaching but they did lose a ton of players to the NFL. This will eventually catch up to them (remember Miami and USC). But John Brantley will provide great leadership at quarterback which could make the Gators a sleeper pick for the national title. In the end it is probably 50-50 the Gators make a BCS bowl game. I think they will win anywhere from 9 to 13 games, a wide margin.
-Texas-The Longhorns may have a new quarterback but Gilbert looks like he will be the next great quarterback especially after filling in admirably in the title game. The coaching and talent is excellent. The following season 2011 I expect to see Texas in the national title game.
-TCU-An undefeated season until they lost to Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. This season the Horned Frogs will have a better offense but will have to replace a lot of their defense. Who knows maybe a national title game is possible.
-Nebraska-An excellent defense will look to bring back the Corn Huskers past glories. I think they have an excellent shot at winning the Big 12.
-Oregon-Lost their quarterback for the season but I believe Ducks should win the Pac 10 this season.
-Iowa-A team that surprised everyone last season will have to replace their offensive line. I can see them contend for the Big 10 title but they will come up short winning it.
-Virginia Tech-Year after year everyone ranks the Hokies in the top 3-5 preseason but they never live up to it. This could possibly be the year they are in the top 5 but even with the potent running attack the Hokies will still have to replace a lot of their defense.
-Oklahoma-Extremely talented team that will have to replace four 1st round picks but should be able to do so with talent they have. Even though Bradford is gone, Landry Jones is now experienced at quarterback position. The Sooners could contend for the Big 12.
-Wisconsin-The Badgers just dominated Miami in the Champs Sports bowl. It looks like Badgers will have one of the best offenses in the Big 10 with Heisman trophy contending running back John Clay.
-USC-Lane Kiffin will make the Trojans great in their first season with Barkley being more experience at quarterback and the infusion of the #1 rated recruiting class this season could make them contend for high ranking. I could see a 9-4 or 10-3 season.
-Pittsburgh-With Dion Lewis and Jonathan Baldwin returning, Pittsburgh will have two explosive weapons to work with but quarterback Bill Stull is gone. Most people are picking Pitt to win the Big East but I seem to like Rutgers a lot.
-Rutgers-Explosive offense and good defense. What Rutgers is showing me is that year after year they are getting more talent especially looking at the NFL draft results (two 1st round picks). It shows the talent is there. Rutgers will have to play at Pitt in the middle of the season. I believe Rutgers has an excellent shot at winning the Big East.
-Arkansas-The Razorbacks look to have an amazing offense with Ryan Mallet but the defense might not be as good. They get LSU and Alabama at home, two possible upsets. This team could be top 20.
-LSU-I would have the Tigers much higher if it wasn’t for quarterback situation being questionable. They have the talent of Florida and Alabama but not the stability. They could be top 5 this season or they could be unranked.
-Penn State-The talent is there but not the experience on offense. I see the Nittany Lions winning 9 maybe 10 games.
-Georgia-I see the Bulldogs being a sleeper this season possibly getting an at large BCS bowl bid. But right now I have them at #20 because uncertainty at defense with the new defensive coordinator. Don’t be surprised to see them much higher at the end of the season if everything works.
-North Carolina-A weak offense and a strong defense. But under Butch Davis the Tar Heels are becoming a force to be messed with in the ACC especially beating teams like Virginia Tech last season. Great recruiting classes are making them better year after year.
-Texas A&M-This could high for them but the Aggies will have one of the best offenses in the Big 12 with quarterback Jerrod Johnson and running back Christine Michael. They also have 9 starters returning on the defense. I could see them beating Oklahoma or Nebraska or both.
-Oregon State-Almost won the Pac 10 last season and could win it this season.
-Cincinnati-A lot of returning starters but with the lost of Brian Kelly the Bearcats will have a decline for this season.
-Florida State-This may be low but the Seminoles have a new coach and a terrible defense last season. I expect the defense to improve but not to the point to win the ACC. The offense should be amazing.
Other possible top 25 teams next season-Ole Miss, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Auburn, Stanford, Arizona, California, Utah, Clemson, Houston, BYU, Boston College, Washington, Stanford, Tennessee, Boston College, Missouri, UCF, South Florida, West Virginia
