Cristiano Ronaldo: His American Dream

Jeff HarbertJul 17, 2008

Like most people, you are probably absolutely sick and tired of all the rumors revolving around Cristiano Ronaldo’s future.Ā  Every single day the same old stuff is printed in the media.Ā  Every day Cristiano Ronaldo’s name is in the headlines, and no, it’s not because of his recovery from surgery.Ā  People aren’t concerned about whether or not he’ll be fit for the new season.Ā  They only care about where the Portuguese superstar will be playing next season.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the answer to that question.Ā  If I had to make a guess, however, I’d say he’ll still be at Old Trafford next season.Ā  But that’s not why I’m here.Ā  I’m not about to add fuel to the speculation regarding the United's number seven and his future.Ā

Disregard Ronaldo’s immediate future for just one minute, although preferably until next summer!Ā  Ronaldo has recently claimed he would be open to someday playing in the United States.

David Beckham, United’s right-winger before Ronaldo, came to Old Trafford, made the move across the Atlantic Ocean more than a year ago, and many footballers in Europe have also considered a move to the MLS.Ā

Former Middlesbrough midfielder Abel Xavier and ex-Aston Villa striker Pablo Angel both play in the MLS and have already made a big impact.

Ronaldo, in Los Angeles for the prestigious ESPY awards, claimed he would be more than open to a move to the MLS in the future.Ā

ā€œThe league it’s much better than a few years ago, the future is getting better and better,ā€ said Ronaldo.

ā€œI prefer to play in Europe at the minute, but in the future, who knows?Ā  I’ve spoken with Abel (Xavier) a few times and he says it’s great.Ā  It’s great to play here (in the US).ā€

Obviously there is no way Ronaldo will make a move to the MLS in the near future, but I guess we shouldn’t rule out a move to the United States altogether.Ā

Personally, I’m so tired of all of the rumors about Ronaldo going to Real Madrid, that I’d rather hear about rumors about Ronaldo going to the MLS in ten years time, or whenever it might be.Ā
