If reports in the Italian newspapers are to be believed Arsenal are ready to compete with a host of other clubs in signing Roma's £10m-rated impressive centre-back Phillipe Mexes.
Though the 28-year-old French defender has been a key-figure in Claudio Raneri's title challenges this season, yet he has been overlooked in numerous matches by the Italian manager which has led to speculations about a possible move away from Giallorossi.
After arriving from Auxerre to Roma in 2004 he gradually developed into a key-figure for the Italian club. He is in his sixth season at Stadio Olimpico. Mexes has made only 29 appearances for the Italian Serie A title-challengers this season. With only a year left to his contract, various clubs have been reported to be interested in the experienced French international.
After these season's injury scare robbed Arsenal of key-players, Wenger will be looking to reinforce his squad before the start of the next season. With an ageing backline comprising Gallas, Silvestre and Campbell the Gunners' will be looking to inject some youth into their defense. Only Vermaelen is an experienced young player among the present young Gunners.
Although at 28-years, Mexes is not a so called youngster yet he is extremely fit and has the physical stature to suit the Premier League.
With his arrival Arsenal will have added pace and attack in their defensive ranks. Mexes has good marking abilities and he is also good in the air. He could form the perfect defensive pair with Vermaelen at the middle of Arsenal's backline.
Although he is criticised by many of losing concentration sometimes yet nobody can undermine the fact that he will be a really good bargain for Wenger at £10m. Along with his vast experience and defensive skills he can solve Wenger's defensive worries without burning a hole in the pocket.
Though there has been no official confirmation as of yet, but it is suspected that if Roma fail to win the Serie A this season the talented lanky Frenchman could make a move to greener pastures.
Arsenal are set to face competition from the likes of Tottenham Hotspurs and Inter Milan, who have also expressed their interest in the Toulouse born man.
Roma will be looking to cash in on their defender rather than let him go for free. So the summer may see a possible move for Mexes.
Whether Wenger makes a move for the defender? Whether Mexes can fill in the shoes of Gallas and Campbell next season? The next season will bear the answer to that.
