WWE: The Official Return of The Rated R Superstar

Mike SalvatoreApr 28, 2010

The image of Edge spearing Randy Orton this past Monday night was a sight for sore eyes.

Do I have anything against the Viper?

Of course not.

Edge’s actions at the end of RAW seem to point to the conclusion that Edge is thankfully turning heel again.

And it could not have happened soon enough.

I enjoy Edge’s work very much, and I think he is one of the best wrestlers the WWE has ever produced.

Edge made his "not so" surprising return to the WWE back in January at the Royal Rumble where he would go on to win the match.

His return was met with a HUGE pop from the crowd, but it wasn't because Edge is a like-able character but because the fans were thrilled to have one of the most talented and respected wrestlers back and healthy.

All signs seemed to point to Edge feuding with Chris Jericho, yet I held out hope that Edge would remain a heel after he eliminated the WWE’s golden boy John Cena to win the Rumble.

Alas, my hope was quickly deflated once Chris Jericho won the World Heavyweight Championship at the Elimination Chamber Pay-Per-View.

As a wrestling fan, I loved the idea of an Edge-Jericho feud.

It had the potential for epic matches and could easily be the feud of the year in pro wrestling.

However, Edge as the face could become a difficult obstacle to overcome.

First, there was no real angle between the two men.

I know they were tag team partners, but Edge got injured in a singles match, which in no way involved Jericho.

The basis of the feud was that Jericho poked fun of Edge’s injuries a few times and then a pissed off Edge came back to avenge all of the jokes told at his expense.

To quote the Miz here, "Really? Really?"

Next, Edge got saddled with that ridiculous "Spear" gimmick. It was alright the first 30 times I heard it, but it got old very, very quickly.

Lastly, and most importantly, Edge had been such a dynamic heel for so long, the audience just wasn’t able to fully connect with this new fan-friendly Edge.

Some people in the IWC might be clamoring for a rubber match between Edge and Jericho.

I say let the feud die.

They delivered solid matches and had a few good promos, but the fact remains that both these men are great heels, and should stick to what they excel at.

Edge’s return this year is very similar to that of Triple H back in 2002.

Trips had similarly returned from a torn ACL to win the Royal Rumble in 2002.

Prior to his injury, Trips was perhaps the biggest heel in the company, so to see him performing as a face took some getting use to.

Triple H would go on to feud with Chris Jericho, culminating in a match with him at Wrestlemania.

Sound familiar?

What people don’t remember is that soon after the feud ended, Trips would turn heel once again, and by the summer, memories of the face Triple H were a distant memory.

Why did Triple H turn heel so quickly?

The answer is simple.

At that time, he was the best heel in the business.

The same can be said of Edge in 2010.

Fans wanted to cheer him for working his way back from a gruesome injury, but at the same time those fans love to hate the man.

Thank goodness the creative staff has finally seen the light and turned Edge heel once again.

I will call it now.

Edge-Orton will be a far greater feud than Edge-Jericho.

Welcome back Rated R Superstar, now go out and do what you do best.
