How Dana White Is Forcing Anderson Silva's Hand at UFC 117

Tom NgoApr 28, 2010

Although UFC president Dana White has no choice but to showcase controversial middleweight king Anderson Silva as the featured attraction at UFC 117 , that doesn’t mean he isn’t worried about it.

“You have to,” White told a small group of reporters following WEC 48 on Saturday night. “He’s the main event.”

White announced two weeks ago on ESPN’s Jim Rome is Burning that Silva would make his next title defense against Chael Sonnen. The brash president also threatened to fire “The Spider” if he were to ever resort back to his “embarrassing” antics .

White was completely livid as he watched Silva make a mockery out of the organization’s most monumental event. Although the two sides have spoken since the debacle at UFC 112, with Silva’s side claiming White’s angry message was received very loudly and quite clearly, White doesn’t appear completely convinced his prized assassin really understood the notice.

“I wish I could sit down with everyone and explain, ‘Listen, this is what happened with Anderson,’” White said of his biggest enigma. “I can’t. He gave me no answers, either. It’s one of the craziest things, I’m sure, for any of us. All of us have been in the fight business or whatever for a long time, and I’ve never seen anything like that, ever. Ever. Nothing that crazy.”

At the end of the day, when Silva actually wants to fight, nobody can come close to beating him, and it’s rather amusing watching people try. For that reason, White has no choice but to give his champion one final chance to do his thing.

“Listen, he’s our guy,” White said. “He’s the champion. Hopefully, that never happens again.”

Although White didn’t mention a specific date for the 185-pound clash, August 7th inside the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California is the front runner to host the five round affair.
