Roy Williams Needs A Fresh Start, How About The Cleveland Browns?

Brian DiTullioApr 27, 2010

There has been a lot of talk amongst the fans that the Browns need a true veteran wide receiver presence on the team.

The most experienced wide receiver on the team is Chansi Stuckey, who is entering his fourth season. In 11 games with Cleveland last year, Stuckey had 19 receptions for 198 yards and one touchdown.

Of the other receivers on the Browns roster, Mohamed Massaquoi and Brian Robiskie just finished their rookie seasons and only Massaquoi showed real promise; Syndric Steptoe had a very public spat with head coach Eric Mangini after being put on injured reserve last year and Joshua Cribbs isn't a "feature" wide receiver.

The Browns also have Jake Allen, who is on the roster, and that's about all you can say about him because he's never recorded a professional statistic.

The Browns did draft one wide receiver, Carlton Mitchell, in last week's draft, but it remains to be seen what will happen with him since he was a sixth-round pick.

Enter the new free agents, among them Roy Williams, the seemingly odd man out in Dallas after the Cowboys drafted Dez Bryant this past weekend.

Williams, who has just 57 receptions and eight touchdowns in 25 games with the Cowboys, has been a huge disappointment after costing them theirĀ first, third, and sixth round picks in the 2009 draft.

Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones re-affirmed his commitment to keeping Williams on the roster, and quarterback Tony Romo said one main goal of the offseason was to develop better "chemistry" with Williams.

That's good to hear if you're a Cowboys fan, but the truth is they have Bryant on the roster now and Miles Austin had a Pro Bowl 2009 season.

If Jones isn't quietly entertaining trade offers for Williams, that would be surprising.

The Browns also could consider Laveranues Coles, but he had a non-productive 2009 with the Cincinnati Bengals, who released him last month.

Being cast off from the Bengals isn't a great mark on one's resume, so this isn't something the Browns may seriously consider pursuing.

Kevin Curtis seems the most likely veteran receiver the Browns may pick up given he was released from the Eagles, General Manager Tom Heckert's former employer. However, Curtis only played sparingly in three games last year.

The Browns could end up doing nothing, and stick with what they have right now, but no one really thinks that is a good idea.

But if the Browns pick up one more wide receiver, that leaves the roster pretty packed, and someone would have to go. For a look at the Browns options in that department, read Featured Columnist Daniel Wolf's piece here .

The Browns roster will continue to evolve as training camp approaches, so keep your eyes on the waiver wires.
