Lyon Vs Bayern Munich Live, Champions League Semifinal, Second Leg

Jan StarrApr 27, 2010

During the current season in the Champions League, Lyon have been great when playing at home; the only exception was the match against Liverpool in autumn, when the French didn’t manage to win.

Fiorentina, Anderlecht, Real Madrid and Bordeaux—all these tough teams lost on Stade de Gerland. But, can Bayern make an exception? It could happen, if they perform like in the first leg. The Bavarian team lost many opportunities even when they played in ten men. On Allianz Arena Lyon were really dominated by Bayern, who could have won at a difference of more than one goal.

The French should realize they are lucky to start the game at only one goal distance and this makes them the game’s favorites; bookies confirm this fact, too. Still, only two years ago, in 2008, it was the French team who were losingĀ with 2-3 to Bayern Munchen, also in a Champions League match. Anyway, statistics show that Lyon lost only eight matches on their home ground from as many as 46 matches played (all in Champions League).

Bayern have a similar record when performing on Allianz Arena, but now they are to play away; during this season they lost to Bordeaux, Fiorentina and Manchester United when playing on these teams’ home stadium. After their last two defeats, Bayern still managed to qualify, which is a proof that the Germans are nevertheless able to handle really well any away match.

Lyon will play without Jeremy Toulalan (red card), while the same problem keeps Bayern’s Franck Ribery on the bench. Olimpique Lyon also have no less than six players who have a yellow card and who thus might be suspended and miss the final if they get another one. Cris, Boumsong and Mathieu Bodmar are injured, although the last two have trained themselves and are likely to be in the starting eleven.

Bayern, on the other hand, are not affected by players’ injuries, as only Daniel van Buyten and Martin Demichelis are not certain to play. Van Gaal’s team will be rejoined by Badstuber and van Bommel.

It is going to be a tight match and we should expect Lyon to attack starting with the first moments of the game, while Bayern will probably try to surprise the former with counterattacks. If the Germans manage to score, the French team will need no less than three goals to make it to the final. So, theoretically, Bayern are the favorites for qualification.
