Could Ronaldinho Make AC Milan Unstoppable In Serie A and Europe Next Season?

Barney CorkhillJul 16, 2008

They have been off the pace in Serie A for years now. They even failed to qualify for the upcoming Champions League—a competition they have a special affinity with.

But a certain samba superstar has swapped the red and blue stripes of the Nou Camp for the red and black stripes of the San Siro, and he could be the start of the solution to all their problems.

Ronaldinho and his new team-mates will be on a desperate mission to bring the bragging rights back to their side of Milan.

And I wouldn't bet against them.

Just look at their squad now. They have one of the most star studded squads in the world, with the likes of Dida, Paolo Maldini, Gennaro Gattuso, Filippo Inzaghi, Clarence Seedorf, Alessandro Nesta, Andrea Pirlo, Kaka, Gianluca Zambrotta and now Ronaldinho.

Between those ten players there are 21 Champions Leagues, seven World Cups, two Ballon d'Ors and three World Player of the Year awards. That is a formidable group of players.

Think what their midfield could be! Gattuso and Pirlo as holding players while Kaka and Ronaldinho go and do their stuff at the other end of the field. Gattuso and Pirlo know each other inside out from Milan days and Italy days, while Ronny and Kaka aren't exactly strangers. They will know each other well from Brazil duty.

And if one gets injured they have Mathieu Flamini, Clarence Seedorf, Emerson, or Massimo Ambrosini to cover. I think they have the best midfield in the world by quite a way.

And with Alexandre Pato and Inzaghi, they aren't exactly lacking up front either. Yet they are still strongly linked to Emmanuel Adebayor and Didier Drogba. Now those signings would make them truly unstoppable.

This Milan side is far too good to be playing in the UEFA Cup next season, but that is the price you have to pay for finishing fifth in your league (unless of course you win the Champions League, as Liverpool know all too well.)

But despite this dream team squad list, they may not do as well as expected. After all, out of the ten listed above, all but two have been there for a number of years, and they have failed in Serie A now for a number of years.

And you have to wonder—are they straying too near the "Galacticos" route, which didn't bring Real Madrid much success?

However, if I was to be asked if they will be a hit or a miss, I would say a hit.

They have one of the best goalkeepers of the last 10 years, a hugely experienced and talented defence, a midfield people would put in their dream team, and an attack full of goals.

Carlo Ancelotti has a truly amazing squad at his disposal, but he still has a lot to do to get them firing on all cylinders, and to get them back among the very best in the world.
