My response:
Mike Martz has long ignored the tight end position in his pass-heavy offenses. Granted he’s never had one with the talent level of Greg Olsen, with Vernon Davis as a possible exception (though Davis hadn’t blossomed as a player). Still, with Martz’s track record, owning Olsen becomes a riskier proposition.
Olsen truly is one of the Bears’ best options in the passing game. He’s got a good blend of speed and size. He’s numbers read 54-574-5 and 60-612-8 over the past two years. A tight end with averages of 57 catches for 593 yards and 6.5 TDs over two years is desirable. Especially one entering just his fourth year in the league.
Having Martz as his offensive coordinator doesn’t mean Olsen is guaranteed for a fall. However, the risk that he does take a step back is higher than some of the other top tight ends with the possible exception of Tony Gonzalez. He has to show his age at some point, right?
