Colorado Rockies' President Passes Away

Jeff SummersApr 20, 2010

Baseball is just a game. That statement should be a constant reminder to all of us and never more so than when tragedy strikes. Keli McGregor, the president of the Colorado Rockies, was found dead this morning in his hotel room in Salt Lake City, Utah.

McGregor was traveling with the Rockies CEO and Chairman Charlie Monfort and executive vice president Greg Feasel. The cause of death appears to be by natural causes, but there will be an investigation by the Utah State Medical Examinerโ€™s Office.

I had the opportunity to meet Mr. McGregor last fall during the ground-breaking ceremony for the new Spring Training facility the Rockies will share with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was a personable man who loved the game and loved the Rockies.

McGregor had been the Rockies' President since 2001 and during his tenure he helped establish the winning attitude that permeates the Colorado franchise. Not only was he interested in the on-field product, but he paid special attention to the fans.

He helped create a wonderful fan experience both at Coors Field and also in Tucson for Spring Training. He was always willing to listen to the fans and incorporate their suggestions to make each game special.

A talented athlete himself, McGregor played football for Colorado State as well as in the NFL for the Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, and Seattle Seahawks. Despite his football background, it was baseball that he loved which was evident in the way he connected with the fans of Colorado.

McGregor was 48-years-old and is survived by his wife Lori and their four children daughters Jordan, Taylor, Landri, and son Logan. Thoughts and prayers go out to the McGregor family during this time.
