Steelers Acquire Byron Leftwich, Ben Roethlisberger Still on the Roster

For a team that has as much depth at quarterback as the Pittsburgh Steelers, things don't look good for Ben Roethlisberger's future with the team.

Byron Leftwich was acquired on Tuesday from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a seventh-round pick, adding to the Steelers' already crowded line of quarterbacks behind center.

Currently on the roster are Roethlisberger, Dennis Dixon, and Charlie Batch.

Leftwich brings that number to four, and teams usually only keep three on the roster.

Add to this the team's announcement of a "zero tolerance" policy for bad off-the-field behavior, and Roethlisberger's week isn't getting any better.

Now, we all know Roethlisberger is 99.9 percent likely to receive a suspension from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in the next day or so, ranging between a two- and four-game suspension, according to most reports.

Bearing that in mind, both Charlie Batch and Dennis Dixon have done fine jobs filling in for Roethlisberger in the past, and there's no reason to think at this point anything will change for the beginning of the season.

And while the Steelers might want an extra quarterback hanging around during the suspension, there are going to be a good crop of young quarterbacks fresh out of college that would cost the team far less.

Leftwich knows the system, though, having played for Pittsburgh in 2008, and is in a better position to just step right in, so the Steelers are going for continuity.

The Leftwich acquisition only adds fuel to the fire, and the question remains—will the Steelers to pull the trigger on what would be one of the biggest trades in the history of the NFL and trade up with the St. Louis Rams to draft Sam Bradford?
