Ā Ā Ā Kentucky rolled up 57 points in the first half, shot 58% for the game, and crushed Youngstown State 89-62 in a SMCAA South Region 2nd round blowout.Ā The Wildcats had five players in double figures, led by John Wall and his 22 points and 8 assists.Ā UK also got good games from Patrick Patterson (14 points, 7 rebounds), Eric Bledsoe (11 points, 4 assists), Darnell Dodson (11 points with three 3 pointers), and DeMarcus Cousins (10 points, 10 rebounds).
Ā Ā Ā The Penguins got double figure games from DeAndre Mays and Dallas Blocker who had 10 points apiece.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā #17 Arkansas 75, #16 Vermont 69
Ā Ā Ā Arkansas made a one point halftime lead stick all they way through the second half as they defeated Vermont 75-69 in a good 2nd round South match-up.Ā The Razorbacks, which led 40-39 at the half, never gave up the lead after the break.Ā They were led by Michael Washington and his 16 points and 9 rebounds and he got help from Rotnei Clarke and his 15 points which included 3 three pointers.Ā Arkansas shot well from beyond the arc, hitting on 7 of 13 attempts.
Ā Ā Ā Vermont got a great game from Marquis Blakely and his 25 points and 11 rebounds on the night.Ā Blakely hit 9 of 17 shots from the field and he was a perfect 7 for 7 from the line.Ā Maurice Joseph was the only other Catamount in double figures as he had 13 points in the game including three 3 pointers.Ā They struggled as a team, though, from three point range, making just 6 of 19 attempts on the night.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā SOUTH REGION 3RD ROUND: #17 Arkansas vs. #1 Kentucky
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā #24 Maine 71, #9 South Florida 54
Ā Ā Ā Maine used a 22-6 run over a 8:00 minute span in the second half to break open the game and upset South Florida 71-54 in a South 2nd round surprise.Ā With the Black Bears leading 47-41 with 10:30 remaining, Terrance Mitchell scored 6 of his team leading 18 points to trigger the run.Ā Gerald McLemore added 17 points in the victory, including an impressive 5 of 7 from three point range.Ā Murphy Burnatowski was also in double figures for Maine with 11. The Black Bears were great from behind the arc, hitting 12 of 18 in the contest.
Ā Ā Ā The Bulls got 15 points from Chris Howard to lead the way.Ā Dominique Jones added 14 points and 4 assists in the loss for USF.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā #8 Connecticut 68, #25 Central Michigan 54
Ā Ā Ā Connecticut played great defense in establishing an 11 point halftime lead and went on to defeat Central Michigan 68-54 in a South 2nd round game.Ā The Huskies allowed the Chippewas to shoot just 37% for the game while shooting 56% themselves.Ā Jerome Dyson and Stanley Robinson each had 15 points to lead UCONN on the night.Ā Robinson also had 8 rebounds and hit the Huskies only 3 pointer of the night.Ā Gavin Edwards chipped in 12 points going 4 for 5 from the floor.
Ā Ā Ā CMU was led by Jordan Bitzer as he was the only player in double figures.Ā He had 18 points in the contest including 4 three pointers.Ā The rest of the Chippewas struggled as they managed to shoot just 37% for the game.
