Packers 2010 NFL Mock Draft

1-Eric Berry (S)

-Best safety in the draft. He excels in the passing game and is strong against the run. Berry solidifies the back of the defensive backfield. Bigby just doesn’t have the talent to consistently succeed in pass coverage and Berry would shore up the problem. Plus him and Collins give the Packers the ability to disguise coverage and blitzes that would drive even veteran QBs crazy. Also I like this pick because many have Berry rated as the best CB also. If injuries plague the CB position again like they did last year Berry has the ability to step in and then Bigby can step back into his starting role. Berry gives the Packers options and playmaking ability similar to the way Charles Woodson does.

2-Joe McKnight (RB)

-McKnight would be the he Lighting to Grant’s Thunder. McKnight gives the Packers a game breaker who can take it to the house every time he touches it. He is also a great receiving back which the Packers are lacking. He is too small to carry the full load but is a great complimentary back. He has a history of small injuries which has caused him to fall but he is a big play back.

3-Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (CB)

-A high character kid with the talent to match. He has all the tools to play in the NFL and be a successful player. He falls to the third round due to the fact he played at Indiana (PA) and didn’t compete against elite competition. He played both CB and S in college but probably grades out as a CB in the NFL but has the ability to shift to S.

4-O’Brien Schofield (OLB)

-The Packers will have to wait for his service because he tore his ACL at the Senior Bowl but this kid can get after the QB. He was regarded as the best rushing DE in the Big Ten but due to his size he will have to change positions and could excel in as the OLB in the 3-4. Schofield is a second round talent who fell due to injury.

5-Trade Back

5B- Arthur Moats (OLB)

-Played DE in college but due to lack of size will have to change position. He had good production rushing the QB 11.5 and 11 sacks in his junior and senior season. He is 6’0’’ tall which is a little short but his pass rushing skills could be maximized as he develops into a more well rounded player.

6A- Marcus Easley (WR)

-A WR with good size and speed. 6’3’’ 210lbs and ran a 4.39 in the forty. Easley played for a run heavy team at Connecticut so his talents weren’t maximized. After not having any big success his three previous years he developed into a big play receiver his senior season. Easley is a good addition to the Packers receiving core who could have to deal with the fact of possibly losing James Jones or Donald Driver after next season when both of their contracts end.

6B- Dennis Landolt

-One of the premier LT in the Big Ten but overshadowed by Bulaga and Saffold. He is not regarded as high due to the fact he lacks ideal length and bulk. He moves very well running the 40 running a 5.01 and his skill set could be maximized and his weaknesses hidden in the zone-blocking scheme.

7A- Zoltan Meske (P)

-This one is simple. Best available punter in the draft. Packers need a punter

7B-Barry Church (ILB)

-Heavier safety that lacks the speed to play safety at an NFL level. If he bulks up he could be an effective Nickel package ILB linebacker due to his experience in the secondary and could develop into a starter once further learning the position. It’s a project pick in the 7th round but worth the risk here.

I know many people will disagree with this draft because it lacks OT’s. I may be one of the few on this but I believe the Packers have a much stronger STARTING Offensive line than they are given credit for and I don’t think we should rush to pick OTs early just to add depth. I know the Packers gave up 51 sacks last year but I think people fail to realize in the last 8 games after they got Tauscher back they gave up only 16 sacks and 6 of those sacks came in Tauscher’s first game back against Tampa Bay while the line was still developing chemistry. So over the last 7 games which included games against Dallas (7th), San Francisco (3rd), Pittsburgh (2nd) and Arizona(6th) and a good Baltimore defense the Packers only gave up 10 sacks. (The parenthesis is where the team ranked in team sacks in the NFL last year.) Overall I don’t think Thompson should rush into picking offensive lineman. Thompson has the philosophy of developing small school talent and should stick to his philosophy. Lang showed good promise last year and Giacomini didn’t play OT until his senior year in college when he converted from TE. Both of these players could develop into starting tackles. Plus I have a hard time seeing Thompson paying Clifton $7 million a year and than drafting another player who would command a large salary at the same position.

TT's first three picks this year need to be players that need to be able to step in and contribute right away and I think a starting safety, a complimentary running back and a nickel/dime cornerback are positions that not only are values where they are being selected but also positions of need.
