Conspiracy Theory: Mike Leach Thinks Texas Tech Conspired to Fire Him

Todd KaufmannApr 17, 2010

This stopped becoming news over a month ago.

The pirate ship has sailed. A new coach has been hired. This isn't news anymore.

Apparently someone forgot to tell that to former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach, because he hasn't stopped talking since he was fired back in December.

This time, Captain Barbosa, if you'll forgive the Pirates of the Caribbean reference, has come up with a new conspiracy theory. No he didn't find out that Area 51 is housing an alien spacecraft or prove that the Loch Ness Monster exists; Leach is now accusing Texas Tech of conspiring to fire him.

We all know this started because he made what most would agree is stupid move by putting Adam James, son of ESPN analyst Craig James, into a dark room when James complained of a migraine and refused to practice. Leach, on the other hand, doesn't exactly agree with what's being said.

So much so that he and his attorneys filed new accusations to the court on Friday. Accusations that the school, a day after Leach signed a new contract extension, was going to fire him before his $800,000 bonus kicked in.

Dicky Grigg, an attorneyĀ for the school, told the Associated Press, ā€œToday’s action by Mike Leach and his attorneys is another absurd act of desperation. This is the legal strategy one deploys when the facts and the law are irrefutably against him.ā€

Instead of taking responsibility for being an idiot and doing something he shouldn't have done, regardless of Adam James' flakey or entitled attitude, Leach continues to fire at the university and throw out wild accusations just to see what sticks.

Unfortunately for Leach—and his attorneys, for that matter—those that might have cared back in late January or early February have stopped caring now that it's almost the end of April. This is old news to us, and it's starting to look nothing more than desperation at this point, coach.

When the story first broke, there were letters sent in from former players backing coach Leach talking about the attitude (or lack thereof) of James and how he thought he could skate through his time at Texas Tech.

Even though there were some players backing Leach, other playersĀ came out and made statements againstĀ him and how they're happy he's gone.

Defensive lineman Chris Perry told ESPN.com, "I have no complaints about this decision.Ā He put Adam in a shed like an animal. Like an animal in a cage. That was bull. You call other players. I think it was a good decision. We have our pep back now. We practice hard this week. We had less stress this week. You know why? Because he's gone."

Cornerback Tramain Swindall echoed the sentiments of Perry, "I do agree, and I'm supporting Adam and what he's doing because it's the right thing to do, and so do most of the players. It wasn't just about Adam. It was always a negative vibe."

While Leach may have been a good coach for Texas Tech while he was with the school, and while he may have made an impact on former players, keeping his name in the news and throwing out wild accusations is not exactly the way to keep your name in the running for other head coaching jobs.

Other schools that may have been looking at Leach for their opening could very well be changing their mind because they don't want to deal with a guy who is going to make accusations when he is no longer the man for the job.

This lawsuit needs to go away, and unless Leach and his attorneys have hard evidence that there was a conspiracy, what really is the point of continuing this witch hunt?
