2010 SMCAA TOURNAMENT – SOUTHWEST REGION – FIRST ROUND
#32 New Hampshire 76, #33 Army 52
New Hampshire had 4 players score in double figures and also held Army to 35% shooting in defeating the Black Knights 76-52 in a SMCAA Southwest 1st round thrashing. Alvin Abreu led the way with 20 points and got help from Tyrone Conley and Ferg Myrick, who scored 14 points apiece. Russell Graham added 12 for the victors.
Army did not have a player score in double figures and was led by Cleveland Richard’s nine.
SOUTHWEST REGION 2ND ROUND: #32 New Hampshire vs. #1 Kansas State
#36 Missouri-Kansas City 85, #29 Tennessee Tech 80
Missouri-Kansas City almost led a 15 point halftime lead slip away in a wild 2nd half, but held on to defeat Tennessee Tech 85-80 in 1st round Southwest thriller. Trey McKinney led the way for the Kangaroos with 21 points, while Latreze Mushatt added 17 and Jay Couisnard and Spencer Johnson chipped 13 apiece. UMKC took care of business at the line as well hitting 27-31 from the stripe.
The Golden Eagles, who scored 51 of their 80 points in the 2nd half, were led by Kevin Murphy’s 23 points. Frank Davis (13), Alfred Jones (13), and Elijah Muhammad (12) all scored in double figures as well.
SOUTHWEST REGION 2ND ROUND: #36 Missouri-Kansas City vs. #4 St. Mary’s
#34 Louisiana-Monroe 73, #31 Bucknell 58
Louisiana-Monroe built a 15 point halftime lead and cruised through the second half to a 73-58 1st round Southwest win over Bucknell. Tommie Sykes led the way for the Warhawks with 16 points. Tony Hooper and Dynile Forbes each added 10 points in the victory.
Bryan Cohen and Mike Muscala, who each scored 12 points, led the Bison, who shot only 35% from the field for the contest. Muscala also led Bucknell with 8 rebounds.
SOUTHWEST REGION 2ND ROUND: #34 Louisiana-Monroe vs. #2 Brigham Young
#30 Hawaii 71, #35 Navy 47
Hawaii, playing superb defense all game long, held Navy to 32% shooting in crushing the Midshipmen 71-47 in a Southwest 1st round blowout. The Rainbow Warriors got balanced scoring as well, as Roderick Flemings led the way with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Petras Balocks also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards, while Dwain Williams added 10 points off the bench.
Navy was led by Chris Harris and Jordan Sugars, who each had 13 points, but could only manage to hit 18 of 57 shots on the night.
SOUTHWEST REGION 2ND ROUND: #30 Hawaii vs. #3 Pittsburgh
#22 Quinnipiac 75, #43 Chicago State 65
Quinnipiac used a key 8-0 run over a three minute span in the second half to break open a close game and went on to defeat Chicago State 75-65 in a SMCAA Southwest 1st round game. Justin Rutty lead the Bobcats with 17 points and 14 rebounds in the victory, while Deontay Twyman had 14 points off the bench for QC as they shot 46% for the game.
The Cougars were led by Carl Montgomery and his 17 points and 9 rebounds. Christian Wall added 14 points for Chicago State in the loss.
SOUTHWEST REGION 2ND ROUND: #22 Quinnipiac vs. #11 William & Mary
#24 Davidson 87, #31 Gardner-Webb 63
Davidson used a 52 point second half to take control and run away from Gardner-Webb, 87-63, in a 1st round Southwest game. The Wildcats had three players with 20 points as Jake Cohen (21 points, 9 rebounds), J.P. Kuhlman (21 points), and Will Archambault (20 points, 9 rebounds led the way. Brendan McKillop added 13 in the victory.
The Bulldogs were led by Jonathan Moore and Grayson Fittner, who each had 10 points. However, GWU was out rebounded 43-22 in the loss.
SOUTHWEST REGION 2ND ROUND: #24 Davidson vs. #9 Wofford
#23 Iowa 60, #42 Maryland-Baltimore County 44
Iowa held Maryland-Baltimore County to 3 points over the final 8:18 to pull away and win, 60-44, in a Southwest 1st round matchup. The Hawkeyes were led by Jarryd Cole and his 12 points and 8 rebounds. Eric May added 10 points for Iowa in the win.
The Retrievers got 14 points from Chauncey Gilliam, but he was the only one in double figures. UMBC shot only 35% from the field in the contest.
SOUTHWEST REGION 2ND ROUND: #23 Iowa vs. #10 Marshall
#25 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 62, #40 Hartford 46
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi got 17 points from Kevin Palmer and 12 points and 11 rebounds from Demond Watt in a 62-46 victory over Hartford in a 1st round Southwest win. Justin Reynolds added 10 points as the Islanders shot 20 of 27 (74%) from the free throw line.
Joe Zeglinski had 10 points to be the only Hawk in double figures as Hartford shot only 33% for the game and only 50% from the free throw line.
