Colt McCoy: It's Crunch Time, So Where Does He Go?
The 2010 NFL Draft is now just a few days away and with most workouts coming to an end it’s time for NFL scouts, owners, general managers, and coaches to start figuring out which players would be the best fit for them in their system.
There has been a lot of focus on the top quarterbacks in this draft and at times you hear that former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy is being lumped in with those guys while at other times you hear that he isn’t being considered as a top choice.
So where does McCoy belong?
You have to rank McCoy behind both Sam Bradford and Jimmy Clausen now despite the fact that he ended his career as the quarterback with the most wins in college football history. Why? The two "S’s"—system and size.
Most scouts knock McCoy because of the type of system that he played in and feel that he might have a tough time adjusting to the varying types of offenses that are run in the NFL.
The other "S" in this equation is size. McCoy stands just 6’1” and quarterbacks who are either near the same height (New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is a good example of a shorter quarterback who has had a lot of success in the NFL) have had some success in the NFL. McCoy is no stranger to being a success so you would think that scouts would feel that he would be a good fit in the NFL.
After having a good workout in front of several NFL scouts and coaches, the NFL has a much better idea of what McCoy can do and we should get a better idea of where he might go.
He won’t end up going in the early part of the first round but could go later in the first or early in the second. Some of the possibilities include the Rams (if they don’t go for someone with their first pick) the Browns, the Bills, and quite possibly Jacksonville.
McCoy looks like he will be a sure-fire second-round pick at any rate and could have a decent enough NFL career if he lands with the right team and gets in the right situation.
The only question now is, which team and which situation will he get into? Hopefully it’s one that will allow him to have a great career where he gets a chance to start and try to match the same kind of success that he had in college.
