Santonio Holmes Should Have Been a 49er: Is San Francisco Asleep at the Wheel?
Santonio Holmes for a fifth round pick? Really?
Why couldn't the 49ers pull this one off?Ā
Maybe we don't need a Super Bowl MVP-caliber special teamer and receiver. Yeah, that's probably it.

Why get Holmes with a fifth round pick when we can throw a first rounder at C.J. Spiller and pass on a defensive back or offensive lineman?
The sad part is, the 49ers probably didn't even know Holmes was available, and all my sarcasm is truly for naught.
The sad part is, as I have suggested in previous articles, that the 49ers don't really seem to have any plan in the offseason except to draft.
I am as excited as anyone about the depth in this draft. I wouldn't have traded for Holmes for a first or second round pick.Ā
Holmes for a third round pick? I would balk at it and probably still make the trade.
Holmes for a fourth rounder? Done.
Holmes for a fifth rounder? Done, and give me a raise!
At such a position of need for the 49ers, a No. 2Ā or No. 3 receiver and a special special teamer...even if you were drunk or high, you would have enough sense to make this trade.
That only leaves one option: The 49ers are sleepwalking through the offseason.
Sure, any 49er fan with any sense would give a fourth rounder to outbid the Jets. The fact is we have a better fifth round pick than the Jets and are in a different conference than the Steelers, so all it would have taken is a fifth rounder.
The 49ers are driving me crazy this offseason. Some of you made some excellent points about not bringing in Donovan McNabb, from being concerned about the cost to not thinking McNabb is goodĀ at wanting to give Alex Smith a chance.
Not bringing in Holmes for a fifth round pick, however, is a disaster.
There will be no joy in Mudville...for mighty (I don't even know who is responsible for the 49ers anymore) has struck out.
