Would You Rather Play for the Mets or the Twins?

Flushing Baseball DailyApr 12, 2010

Ian Oโ€™Connor wrote a pretty terrible column involving Johan Santana and truth serum. If you want to subject yourself to something that should be in a high school newspaper, hereโ€™s the link.

Oโ€™Connorโ€™s article did get me thinking, Santana first made it known that he wanted out of Minnesota when he thought that the Twins future didnโ€™t include the playoffs (at the time the Twins traded Luis Castillo of all people to the Mets during the playoff stretch drive to save money). Right now, the Twins appear, if not better than the Mets, at least as good as them as far as future playoff chances.

It is doubtful that the Twins could have afforded, but would he have demanded out of Minnesota if he had realized that it really wouldnโ€™t have increased his chances to make the playoffs?

Realistically it would have been best for Santana to have kept his mouth shut and to just wait for free agency when he could have signed with a team like the Angels, Cardinals, Phillies, Yankees, or Red Sox. It just goes to show that being pushy isnโ€™t the best way to get what you want.
