South Carolina Gamecocks Football: Steve Spurrier To Call All Plays In 2010
It is being reported that University of South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier do all the offensive play calling in 2010. This is an interesting development for the Game Cocks.
Most writers, including myself, think that South Carolina has the talent to contend for the Southeastern Conference's Eastern title. The lingering doubt in almost every writer’s mind is centered on play calling.
While Steve Spurrier was widely considered a great play caller while at Florida, this has never been the case at South Carolina. It seems he has completely forgotten about the running game.
Since Steve Spurrier came to South Carolina the Game Cocks have consistently been at or near the bottom of the conference in rushing offense . This has left them near the bottom of the conference in total offense and scoring offense .
In fact, South Carolina was only in the top-five statistically in the SEC in fumbles recovered, passing offense, passing defense, scoring defense and rushing defense. They were not in the top two in any statistical category.
There has been the excuse that talent wasn’t there.
That is a mute point now. If it wasn’t there then, and isn’t there now, it’s never going to be there.
South Carolina is loaded with talent.
Steve Spurrier has to learn a new game. Teams learned how to better defend his "fun-n-gun" spread years ago. He needs to add another dimension. I think that dimension is a running game.
The running game adds the unpredictability to open up Spurrier's pass attack. In fact, he was also more successful at Florida when he chose to run the ball.
I believe that South Carolina needs to have 2,000 yards of rushing in 2010 to contend for the SEC Eastern crown. I think that any less than that will again relegate South Carolina to the middle of the pack in the SEC.
