Could Bolton Trio Be Just What Arsenal Need To Strengthen Their Squad?

Callum D'SouzaApr 8, 2010

The 2009-10 season is witnessing one of the closest title races in Premier League history. With just a mere five matches to go in the campaign, Chelsea sit top of the table with 74 points, whilst Manchester United are breathing right down their necks on 72 points. Arsenal find themselves in third on 71.

Although it will be an intense run home for the three giants, the cellar dwellers of the English Premier League also have an immensely tense race too.

Bar Portsmouth, who were condemned to relegation almost as soon as the first whistle blew for 2009/2010, 14th place to19th place are all very much in contention for Championship football next season. Burnley are in 19th on 27 whilst in 18th is Hull on 28, who have a game in hand. Then in the barley-safe zone you have West Ham on 28, Wigan on 31, Bolton on 32, and Wolverhampton dittoing the Wanderers.

Bolton is a name many may have thought would not be so dangerously close to peril. Despite having the much maligned Gary Megson as manager at the beginning of the season, the Trotters still boasted a decent squad capable of challenging for a Europa place. However, with Megson's sacking in January and Owen Coyle taking time to settle in, the Horwich-based town have struggled.

Although Coyle's troops look relatively safe of the drop, things do have a tendency to change and by May we could see the Reebok soon hosting some very entertaining Championship matches.

So if Bolton were to get relegated or even if they keep their head and avoid relegation would this trio be worthy of the Arsenal roster?

1.
Jussi Jääskeläinen

If it one thing you can safely say about Bolton is that they boast a stunning keeper in Jussi Jääskeläinen. For over a decade the reliable Fin has been a relieving presence in the Trotters goal. At 34, the keeper may be old but he lacks nothing in talent.

Furthermore, it is all too known to the Arsenal fans that the Gunners desperately need a new keeper with their current two leaving a lot to be desired. Since being forced to depart the Champions League due to Barcelona, it is now unlikely Arsene Wenger will boast any silverware this season.

So a move for the Finnish shot stopper could be justifiable. He is unlikely to be to expensive, most likely costing from 2-5 million.

If Arsenal's deputy keeper Lukasz Fabianski and youngster Vito Mannone are both sent on loan in the Premiership or Europe and then promising talent Wojciech Szczęsny is promoted to third choice and finally first choice Manuel Almunia is dropped to the bench and "Jussi" becomes the first choice. Then Arsenal will for once have a reliable array of keepers.

2. Kevin Davies

With Emmanuel Adebayor departing the Emirates in the summer and Wenger failing to lure any promise, Arsenal were left with a slim frontline. Then when the usual Arsenal injury bomb detonated around November, Arsenal were without dominant frontmen Robin van Persie and Nicklas Bendtner, this ensured Arsenal were frail on big strikers.

But with rumours linking Marouane Chamakh to Arsenal in the soon coming summer, Arsenal could have a strong forward pack. But with Carlos Vela definitely requiring a loan move next season and the form and fitness of Eduardo Da Silva very questionable, Bolton's Kevin Davies could provide a great purchase for Wenger.

Although the English striker has expressed his desire to see out his career at the Reebok, it would not be impossible to convince the 32-year-old with the enticement of Champions League football and even a Premier League trophy could persuaded Davies.

Davies would be a great asset off the bench and when the injury toll kicks in. The former Blackburn striker is quick and incredibly strong in the air and would be a strong contributor if bought.

3. Gary Cahill

One of the glaring problems in Arsenal thrashing from Barcelona was how lacklustre the replacement defenders are at the Emirates. With usual centre half William Gallas forced out with a calf injury, Wenger was forced to call upon veteran Mikael Silvstre.

With Wenger rarely giving Silvestre runs in the side and allowing his confidence to drop it was evident why Lionel Messi was such a force. Yes, the Argentine is a phenomanal athlete but better defending may have hampered his performance.

Granted Wenger has been without usual deputy Johan Djourou for the season. The Swiss is highly rated and sadly an injury in pre season internationals forced him out of 2009/2010.

But with Wenger lacking able deputies, Gary Cahill seems an obvious option of a signing. The Englishman is strong and powerful. The 24-year-old would bring a powerful presence to the Arsenal backline and allow a stronger array of central defenders.

With Mikael Silvestre, Sol Campbell, and Philippe Senderos all needing new clubs next season. The addition of Cahill would see Arsenal boasting a centre half group of William Gallas, Thomas Vermaelen, Johan Djourou, Gary Cahill, Harvard Nodtviet, and Kyle Bartley.

So could this Bolton trio be a positive income for the Arsenal roster. Granted it is a tad hopeful, but as we dearly know in football, anything can happen.
