This year's Butler team will be remembered forever. The Bulldogs made a run to the championship game in their hometown but fell one bounce short of winning a national title.

2. Northern Iowa (2)

Record: 30-5, 15-3 MVC

RPI: 17

Northern Iowa's Cinderella run to the Sweet 16 was overshadowed by Butler's run to the Final Four, but nothing can be taken away from the Panthers, who upset No. 1 Kansas in the second round.

3. St. Mary's Gaels (6)

Record: 28-6, 11-3 WCC

RPI: 35

St. Mary's also had its own Cinderella run by making the Sweet 16. The Gaels beat Richmond and Villanova to get there but were then blown out by Baylor.

4. Cornell Big Red (8)

Record: 29-5, 13-1 Ivy

RPI: 46

Cornell took their anger from being under-seeded out on their opponents. The Big Red handled Temple and Wisconsin in the first and second rounds, respectively. After a great 10-2 run to start the Sweet 16 game against Kentucky, they would end up losing 62-45.

5. Old Dominion Monarchs (4)

Record: 27-9, 15-3 CAA

RPI: 27

Old Dominion outlasted Notre Dame in a defensive first-round game. The Monarchs lost to Baylor in the second round.

6. Murray State Racers (7)

Record: 31-5, 17-1 OVC

RPI: 57

Murray State upset Vanderbilt on a buzzer beater in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Racers then lost to Butler in the second round.

Key Losses: Louisiana Tech (Road), Morehead State (Road)


7. Gonzaga Bulldogs (3)

Record: 27-7, 12-2 WCC

RPI: 36

Gonzaga beat Florida State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament but then got blown out by No. 1 seed Syracuse in the second round.

8. Wofford Terriers (14)

Record: 26-9, 15-3 SoCon

RPI: 69

Wofford almost pulled off a big upset in the school's first NCAA Tournament appearance. But the Terriers fell just short, losing 53-49 to No. 4 seed Wisconsin.

9. Siena Saints (5)

Record: 27-7, 17-1 MAAC

RPI: 31

Siena could not win an NCAA Tournament game for the third straight year. The Saints' second-half comeback fell short against No. 4 seed Purdue. The Saints could potentially be in some trouble now that Fran McCaffery bolted for Iowa.

10. Utah State Aggies (9)

Record: 27-8, 14-2 WAC

RPI: 30

Utah State could not handle No. 5 seed Texas A&M in the NCAA Tournament. The Aggies' great season ended with back-to-back losses.

Key Losses: Long Beach State (Road), New Mexico State (Neutral)


11. Northeastern Huskies (10)

Record: 20-13, 14-4 CAA

RPI: 75

Northeastern struggled late in the season and ended up losing to UConn in the first round of the NIT. 

Key Wins: Utah State (Home), VCU (Home), George Mason (Home), ODU (Home), George Mason (Road)

Key Losses: Boston U (Road), Western Michigan (Neutral), Drexel (Home), Hofstra (Home)


12. Virginia Commonwealth (12)

Record: 27-9, 11-7 CAA

RPI: 66

Virginia Commonwealth won seven of its eight postseason games. The Rams defeated Delaware and George Mason in the CAA Tournament before losing to Old Dominion in overtime. They then beat George Washington, Charleston, and Boston to get to the CBI championship, where they swept Saint Louis.

13. Oakland Golden Grizzlies (11)

Record: 26-9, 17-1 Summit

RPI: 52

Oakland's 11-game winning streak ended with an 89-66 loss to Pitt in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Oakland will return most of its team for next season.

14. New Mexico State Aggies (Not Ranked)

Record: 22-12, 11-5 WAC

RPI: 51

New Mexico State shook off its early March struggles and won the WAC Tournament to get an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Aggies then played a close game with Michigan State in the first round, but a lane violation ultimately cost them the game.

15. Wichita State Shockers (13)

Record: 25-10, 12-6 MVC

RPI: 43

Wichita State struggled later in the season but still got a bid to the NIT. The Shockers were upset by No. 6 seed Nevada in the first round of the tournament.

Key Losses: Creighton (Road), Drake (Road), Evansville (Road)


16. William & Mary Tribe (17)

Record: 22-11, 12-6 CAA

RPI: 58

William & Mary played an exciting game against UNC in the first round of the NIT but lost 80-72. 

Key Wins: Richmond (Home), Wake Forest (Road), VCU (Home), Maryland (Road), Northeastern (Neutral)

Key Losses: Iona (Road), Towson (Home)


17. Sam Houston State Bearkats (19)

Record: 25-8, 14-2 Southland

RPI: 70

Sam Houston State made the NCAA Tournament as a No. 14 seed. The Bearkats lost to No. 3 seed Baylor 68-59 in the first round.

Key Losses: Cleveland State (Road), Western Michigan (Road), Texas State (Road)


18. Kent State Golden Flashes (15)

Record: 24-10, 13-3 MAC

RPI: 47

Kent State defeated Tulsa in the first round of the NIT but lost to Illinois in the second round of the tournament.

Key Losses: Green Bay (Home), Bowling Green (Home), Buffalo (Home), Ohio (Neutral)


19. Morehead State Eagles (18)

Record: 24-11, 15-3 OVC

RPI: 84

Morehead State lost a heartbreaker to Murray State in the OVC championship game. The Eagles got a bid to the CIT. They beat Colorado State in the first round but lost to Boston in overtime in the second round.

20. Missouri State Bears (Not Ranked)

Record: 24-12, 8-10 MVC

RPI: 90

Missouri State's strong OOC performance got the Bears a bid to the CIT. The Bears took advantage of the extra opportunity by beating Middle Tennessee, Louisiana Tech, Creighton, and then Pacific in the championship game. The Bears finished the season with a 15-1 non-conference record. The only loss was at Arkansas in overtime.

21. Pacific Tigers (Not Ranked)

Record: 23-12, 12-4 Big West

RPI: 108

Pacific was upset in the first round of the Big West Tournament. The Tigers got a bid to the CIT, where they lost to Missouri State in the championship game. To get to that point, Pacific beat Loyola Marymount, Northern Colorado, and Appalachian State.

22. Morgan State Bears (20)

Record: 27-10, 15-1 MEAC

RPI: 103

Morgan State's seven-game winning streak ended with a loss to West Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bears started the game on a 10-0 run but eventually lost 77-50.

23. Charleston Cougars (22)

Record: 22-12, 14-4 SoCon

RPI: 91

Charleston received a bid to the CBI. The Cougars beat Eastern Kentucky in the first round but lost to VCU in the second round. This was Charleston's second straight 20-win season.

24. North Texas Mean Green (Not Ranked)

North Texas carried an 11-game winning streak into the NCAA Tournament but lost to No. 2 seed Kansas State in the first round by a score of 82-62.

25. Portland Pilots (16)

Record: 21-11, 10-4 WCC

Portland, who was ranked in the top 25 early in the season, lost to St. Mary's in the WCC semifinals. The Pilots still got a bid to the CIT, where they lost to Northern Colorado in the first round.
