Tampa Bay Storm vs. Tulsa Talons (Week 1 Free Pick from Mike Rose)

The Arena Football League betting season kicks off this week with a six-pack of games for football wagering warriors to dig into. As a part of the first weekend of the 23rd season of the AFL, the Tulsa Talons will play host to the Tampa Bay Storm. The Talons, a former af2 team, will be competing in the Southwest Division this year with fellow af2 graduates the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz and Bossier City Battle Wings, along with the expansion Dallas Vigilantes. Tampa Bay will be back in its familiar grounds in the Southeast Division with its arch rivals, the Orlando Predators, but has both the Alabama Vipers and Jacksonville Sharks to beat out to win the divisional crown as well.
Quarterback play is paramount in the AFL, and there aren’t many that did it better two seasons ago than Tampa Bay’s Brett Dietz did. Dietz, who is still only 29 years old, accounted for a total of 90 touchdowns (86 passing) and 4,583 yards in his first full season as the starter for the Storm. Many accept him as the face of this franchise and one of the best quarterbacks in this new league. HC Tim Marcum also brings back a veteran defensive line, including former All-Arena standouts Jermaine Smith, Tim McGill, and Kelvin Kinney.
Whereas the Storm look like the team of old that nearly made the AFL’s postseason in 2008, the Talons look a lot more like a legitimate af2 team to start off the ‘10 campaign. WR Donovan Morgan is going to be one of the most dynamic players in the league if he can break out like he did in ‘08 when he caught 111 passes for 1,281 yards and hauled in 24 touchdowns as a rookie with the Chicago Rush. However, this year, he’ll be catching passes from QB Justin Allgood, who is an unproven commodity at the AFL level but did throw for an af2 record 108 touchdown passes in 2009 with the Talons.
The arena football betting line for this game opened up at Tulsa -2, but has since skyrocketed in the favor of the hosts up to Tampa Bay -7 at the time of publication of this article.
