For the rest of their NFL careers, Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco are always going to be compared against each other, each being in a sense a savior to their respected franchises. But who is the better quarterback or at least has been up to date?
Let's first start off with Matt Ryan, the quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons. He's led the franchise to their first consecutive winning seasons in their franchise history. "Matty Ice" as some have called him has lived to his nickname staying cool and collected in the pocket leading the Falcons to the playoffs during the 08 campaign. Even though injuries bogged him down during the middle of last year, he finished the year strong and is showing the fans and the franchise why he was worthy of the number one pick last year.
Joe Flacco hasn't been doing badly himself though leading the Ravens to consecutive playoff appearances since entering the league. Flacco has one AFC championship appearance under his belt but you can believe that he has a few more in his future as well. Like Ryan, he is showing everyone that he should be the future cornerstone of Ravens franchise.
I believe out of the two QB's, Ryan is the more accurate passer. He can thread the needle to anyone of his receivers in crunch time where as Flacco can be inaccurate, throwing over the heads of his receivers.
I feel that Ryan does more in order for his team to win as well. The Atlanta offense is put on his shoulders and he wouldn't have it any other way. Flacco comes from a team with a respected, but now aging defense. But to me, the defense bails him out in crunch time with Ray Lewis making important stops or Ed Reed picking off balls and taking them to the house. For example, Flacco had 34 yards and 0 touchdowns in the playoff win against the Patriots but his defense was the key reason in that win. I just want to see the offense be put in his hands a little bit more. Ryan obviously doesn't have a defense like that to back him up so if the team wins, it because of his offensive play.
In their own ways, each passer is special doing different things to help elevate their teams to victory. It's a hard one to choose between especially since Ryan got injured midway during the season and we can only debate and imagine whether the season record would have improved or not. Looking at an offensive standpoint, I would give it to Ryan because he doesn't have that great of a D to help lock up wins in crunch time. I can't take anything away from Flacco though seeing how two playoff appearances in two years looks great on his resume but an incredible defensive with two Hall of Famers and the lack of offensive responsibility and faith in Flacco sometimes has me in favor of Ryan. It's going to be fun watching these two young QB's become forces to reckon with as time goes by.
