Formula One Could Provide Fans More

Ashwin EapenJul 9, 2008

I was wondering about a few ways Formula 1 could shake things up. The sport is often absolutely enthralling and other times frustrating. You do sometimes wonder why F1 has gotten so many minute details wrong. Here is a short list of my frustrations with the sport.

It's great that Formula 1 embraces the glamour, the rich, the sexy girls and all that. But I do wonder if they remember that their core audience is made up of the everyday Joes who could probably never even dream of actually driving a Ferrari.

Their book, The Formula One Opus, was recently launched and I was very excited about buying it until I heard the price—to which I responded, "WTF?" This book is going to be bought by a bunch of folks who will probably never touch it and don't know a wanker about the sport.

It's sad how disillusioned we can become about F1.

TV Coverage

Let's be honest. The coverage is rubbish. I've watched the IRL and NASCAR TV coverage, and feel that the simple system of a bar ticking over provides viewers with status of what's going on all the time. Why is it that F1 can't employ this?

Also, why not employ split screens? I mean especially in times of crucial pit stops, you could show how things pan out in greater detail.

There are so many ideas out there and still F1 fails to use any of them. Instead they give us apex speed, which really doesn't say anything. One innovation that I found interesting was the G-Force Metre, but sadly it's employed very rarely.

YouTube

Embrace YouTube for heaven's sake. It's the future and provides the means to reach into a huge untapped audience for F1. F1 protects its videos as if they were as valuable as the royal jewels.

Instead of banning every single video posted, set up an F1 channel on YouTube and provide videos on races, maybe even live streaming footage for a paid amount. If the rest of the sports world has moved on and is embracing this wonderful technology, why not F1?

There is so much history in F1, but you feel that it is wasted. There is lack of programming to tell tales of yesteryear, documentaries and all. I can't believe the great amount of footage that F1 has collected over the years has been allowed to gather dust and be forgotten.

I do hope over the coming years F1 coverage does modernize and improve. This is something for the sport in general to do as well, not just technology wise but in the mindsets, too.

It's a huge step F1 needs to make, simply because there is a huge audience still waiting to be tapped. If F1 doesn't make the right moves in the coming years it could be a lost opportunity.
