Habs Could Benefit From Awarding The "C"

Chris ReadMar 13, 2010

Despite lengthy injuries to a number of their star players this season, the Canadiens find themselves in a tie for sixth Place in the Eastern Conference.

This by no means assures them of a playoff spot but they are moving up the standings at a torrid pace and before they get a chance to come back down, maybe they should think about naming a captain.  Here is a look at who I believe should get the nod.

There are a lot of new faces who could jump into the role:

Scott Gomez - He is probably the name you will hear most often linked with this prestigious honor.  And why not, he is the highest paid player on the team, he is now showing his true ability and he is a natural in front of the media spotlight.

Mike Cammalleri - A little stiff in front of the camera but is locked up for the next four seasons and will be the team's leading scorer throughout that period if he can stay healthy.

Hal Gill - Been there and done it, Gill adds recent Stanley Cup experience and can help motivate the younger guys to realize their playoff potential.

Then you have some guys who have been here and know the lay of the land:

Josh Gorges - The Heart of A Lion on the ice, this guy took a Mike Green slapshot off the head and came back the next game.  He plays a very stable defensive game and can be relied on in all situations.

Tomas Plekanec - All around threat at both ends of the ice.  PP and PK specialist, Plekanec is more than worthy of the captaincy.  The problem....we don't know if Montreal can afford to keep his services for another year.

Finally, my overwhelming choice and the reason why:

Andrei Markov - Markov is the heart and soul of this team.  As Markov goes, so do the Habs.

The 10 games leading up to Markov's return from injury, the Habs went a dismal 3-6-1.  The seven games after his return.....6-1.

Markov has stated that he would be honored to wear the "C" but he will wait until the Habs brass make a decision.

I am of the opinion that awarding Markov the captaincy now would provide a much needed boost to his level of play and help the Canadiens take their game to the next level.  Not to mention the fact that he is the most qualified candidate on the team and he is under contract until at least the end of next season.

Thanks for reading my first article, I look forward to hearing your thoughts/comments.
