2008 ESPY Awards Predictions: Part Two

Matt RoyalJul 8, 2008

This is a continuation off of my first article of the ESPY awards; I finished with the best play award going to Manning’s pass to Tyree.

Best Sports Movie – Resurrecting the Champ.

This is a toughie seeing as how I have not seen Leatherheads or The Game Plan. Semipro had its moments but Resurrecting the Champ with Samuel L. Jackson was a great movie. It involved the plot twists and still provided a great story.

Best Coach/Manager – Pat Summitt.

It’s one thing to win a national championship, but with Summitt it seems like her expectations are the same every year. She coached the Tennessee women’s basketball team to their eighth National Championship and a superb record of 36-2.

Best Finish – Western Kentucky.

From 26 feet away, Western Kentucky point guard Ty Rogers beats the OT buzzer and sinks the game winner for his 12th seeded Hilltoppers.

Hummer Award – George Martin.

Nine months and 3,200 miles later, George Martin helped raise over $2,000,000 for recovery workers in New York, and he did it all with his legs.

Best NFL Player – Tom Brady.

He is your MVP, your single season TD passes record holder, and your face of an NFL dynasty.

Best NBA Player – Kobe Bryant.

Although he can’t do it all by himself, Bryant put the Lakers on his back for the first half of the season and got the Lakers back to the finals a lot quicker than most expected. His 28.3 points per game earned him the NBA MVP award.

Best MLB Player – Josh Beckett.

I would love to see Jake Peavy get this award, but I don’t see that happening.  Beckett was the only pitcher to record 20 wins last season and led the Red Sox to a World Series title.

Best NHL Player – Sidney Crosby.

At the age of 20, Crosby is labeled the next Wayne Gretzky. He captained the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Stanley Cup Finals and finished the season with 24 goals and 48 assists.

Best Male College Athlete - Tyler Hansbrough.

He is a gifted athlete at North Carolina. Hansbrough won the Wooden and Naismith awards as a freshman this year. He posted 22.6 PPG and shot 54% from the field, earning him the 2007-2008 Collegiate Player of the Year award.

Best Female College Athlete - Candace Parker.

Without Parker, the Vols would not have repeated as National Champs. Her 21.3 PPG were a huge factor in Tennessee’s success.
