Chicago Cub Fans Hurt Their Team's Chances...Again

Tony BoombottsJul 8, 2008

The Chicago Cubs have not been to the World Series since 1945 and have not won since 1908.

However, the drought may be ending. Over the past four seasons the Cubs have seen the other championship-starved baseball franchise (the Red Sox) break their curse and win twice.ย  They also watched the hated White Sox win in 2005.

The signing of Lou Piniella as manager makes any franchise an instant contender.ย  People say he didn't get it done in Tampa Bay.ย

Wrong.

That's HIS team that currently has the best record in the American League, and its HIS Cubs that have the best record in the National League.

It is not unfathomable that these two franchises will meet in October. It is also very possible that the Rays will have home field advantage. And...it also very possible that the hubris of Cubs fans may have cost their club that home field advantage.

Thanks to baseball's moronic commissioner, Allan H. "Bud" Selig, the All-Star game has lost its status as an irrelevant exhibition contest for the fans.

Instead, the game becomes an extremely important one. One that might determine who wins the World Series.

With that ridiculous dynamic at play, the fan voting has gone from a proprietary love fest to analytical multiple-choice test. You must study before you make your choices.

Except if you're a Cub fan. You just vote for all the Cubs. That's moronic.

Apparently the Cub fans flooded the ballot box and the results has left many key National League players off the roster, thus giving the American League the clear advantage in the game.

Kosuke Fukudome? Are you nuts? This guy is no better than Tsuyoshi Shinjo or So Taguchi! What happened toย  Ken Griffey Jr.? Or Carlos Beltran? Or anyone else who could actually help the NL win the game?

Alfonso Soriano? You know he's hurt!!! Why are you voting for him?

Geovany Soto? Over Russell Martin? Dumb...

So, here's my question: with the Cubs on the verge of playing deep into October, why did they just pull the biggest faux pas of their 100 year drought?

Because they don't know winning is, and with idiocy like this, they may never find out.

The past two NL MVPsโ€”Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollinsโ€”are not on the roster. Most baseball purists find this baffling. Why do people insist on voting for the players that have had the best three months of a season, rather than voting for the best players? That's what they do in the AL, and that's why the AL wins every year.

Of the NL's top run producers, only five of the top 10 are there. Howard, Beltran, Carlos Lee, David Wright, and Mark Teixeira are not there.ย  That's not all on the Cub fans though. But all the AL heavies will be out in full force.

Enjoy games three, four, and five of the World Series, Cub fans. You don't have Bartman or a goat to blame this timeโ€”just yourselves.
