Vic 'The Raging Bull' Darchinyan Out For Blood Tonight On Showtime

Joe OneillMar 6, 2010

Vic Darchinyan is one of my favorite fighters to watch. He's relentless, overpowering, and a straight-forward, never-take-a-step-backwards fighter.

Over the years, he's been the top flyweight or super flyweight in the world.

He's dominated the sport with a ruthlessness that Lance Armstrong could love.

Amazingly, he finds himself in a "must win" situation against Mexican Rodrigo Guerrero tonight on Showtime.

At 33, Darchinyan has more good years in his rear view mirror than in the road ahead of him.

After going undefeated in his first 26 fights, he's 5-2-1 in his last eight fights.

There are whispers he's lost something. He's not the same devastating fighter he once was. His monster lefts aren't the weapons they once were.

He's getting hit more often.

A little bit of advice—don't believe it.

Fighters age because they get into wars. Just ask Diego Corrales, Fernando Vargas, or Eric Morales.

One massive fight can age a fighter five years.

Darchinyan has, literally, had a cake walk for most of his career. His fights have been as one-sided as the Yankees squaring off against a high school baseball team.

His one KO came at the hands of Nonito Donaire.

Some people say it was a lucky punch that floored Darchinyan. I saw the fight. I thought it was even up until that point. Darchinyan wasn't dominating like he usually does, but he wasn't getting beat up either.

But for Darchinyan to have some big paydays in his future, namely against Donaire, he must win tonight.

He must win convincingly.

I think he will. I think he wants to avenge his two losses against Donaire and Agbeko and retire.

I think he wants a couple of big paydays.

If he does win, it sets up a big rematch against Donaire—providing Darchinyan's promoter, Gary Shaw, can quit acting like a rejected eighth grade girl and make the fight (Donaire dropped Shaw as his promoter and Shaw has refused to make the rematch).

Nonetheless, this should be an outstanding fight. Darchinyan is always fun to watch.

Guerrero is a game opponent. At 13-1, he's no pushover, but he's very green to get in the ring with a veteran like Darchinyan.

I predict a KO in the fifth for the Raging Bull.
