MD Clinches ACC Championsip: Defeat Virginia, 74-68

The Maryland Terripins clinched at least a tie for the ACC Regular Season Championship with a 74-68 victory over Virginia on Saturday.

The Terps are currently on top of the ACC with a 13-3 and a 23-7 overall record.  Duke still has to play North Carolina tonight and must win to stay tied with Maryland.

Terps coming of a thrilling victory over Duke earlier this week, seemed to have a bit of a let down.  However, Virginia was playing their first game of the season with out their leading scorer, Sylven Landesberg.  Landesberg, who was averaging 17.8 in ACC play, was ruled ineligible for the remainder of the season.  Virginia played one of the best games of the season.

The game stood 38-27 at the half.  Virginia rallied in the second half to make the game 66-65.  With 38 seconds remaining, Sean Mosley was fouled and the Virginia Coach was called for a technical.  Greivis Vasquez hit the two technicals, followed by Mosely's two free throws, making the score 70-65.

Vasquez added two more free throw and the score stood 72-65.  Virginia's Sammy Zelinski connected on a 3 pointer to make the score 72-68.  Eric Hayes sank two more free throws, to make the final score 74-68.

The difference in the game was not only the technical foul shots, but the fact that Maryland out rebounded Virginia 31-17.  Landon Milbourne led Maryland with 7 rebounds.

The Terps got 23 from Vasquez, 11 from Hayes, 10 from Mosely, Bowie added 8 and Milbourne scored 5.

Virginia was led by Jeff Jones with 16, Zeglinski with 14, Will Sherrill had 9 and Mustapha Farrakhan 8.  Virginia is now 5-11 in the ACC and 14-15 overall.
