The Curious Case Of The WWE/World Title.

FORT WORTH, TX - NOVEMBER 07: A replica of the WWE world championship belt rests on top of Kyle Busch's #18 Z-Line Designs/WWE Smackdown Toyota prior to the start of the NASCAR Nationwide Series O'Reilly Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway on November 7, 2009 in Fort Worth, Texas. Back in 2002 when Eric Bischoff brought the World Heavyweight Title back to RAW, after Brock lesnar refused to defend the then WWE Undisputed Title on RAW thereby making it exclusive to Smackdown, WWE was a very different place than it is right now. Both RAW and Smackdown had superstars who looked like legitimate contenders to the World/WWE title.

Smackdown had Brock Lesnar, The Rock,Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Edge, Eddie Guerrero, Hogan and The Undertaker, albeit in his biker gimmick. RAW had Booker T, Kane(with the mask), RVD, Y2J, HBK, HHH, Ric Flair, Stone Cold and The Big Show. Any of these superstars, irrespective of their in ring abilities, could have been given the title and it would have seemed legitimate.

At the same time guys like Batista, Randy Orton and John Cena were being introduced to the Pro wrestling world and the WWE knew what impact they would make in the coming years. It was a time when WWE had plethora of talent and having 2 separate titles on RAW and Smackdown seemed like a fair idea. It also paved the way for a HHH’s legendary heel turn which led to the establishment of Evolution.

 That was 2002.

Now, the scenario has changed completely. There are just a handful of guys on both shows who could be considered as legit title holders. Plus some of the fueds (like Orton-Cena, Orton –HHH, HHH-Cena, Edge-Cena), which were considered to be dream fueds a few years back, have become nightmares. No one in a right frame of mind would like to watch another Cena-Orton match any time soon. HBK doesn’t seem to be getting a world title any time soon and WWE seems to have lost all hopes on Shelton Benjamin and Christian (plz let him win the MITB match WWE, plz).

I believe the best thing to do at this point would be to unify the WWE/World title. Both the titles should be kept active and there should be scope to separate the titles again, if and when requiered. This will do two things. It will bring some credibility to the world title once again, which is so desperately requiered as now a days the world title is considered as just a trophy and nothing more. The Sheamus debacle did more harm than good and I don’t think that John Morrison iss ready for the world title right now. Turn him into a heel and improve his mic skills. A manager would do him no harm ( I wish Flair was available for the job).

The return of the Undisputed title is what the WWE needs right now. Allow the champion to work on both shows, just like old times. This will allow new rivalries to develop. It’s been ages since a Y2J-HHH, HHH-Undertaker, Undertaker-John Cena, Batista-HHH match. Plus we could have Punk-Orton, Punk-HBK, HBK-Edge, HBK-Mysterio, Christian-HBK etc. storylines which have rarely been tried before.

The brand split provides full opportunity to the talent on both shows to shine and that element would be taken away if the brand split were to end. Therefore, the better idea would be to bring back the Undisputed title back, for the time being at least. It would bring a lot of freshness in the storylines and would certainly bring back some credibility to the World titke again.
