I've been the fan of the South Carolina Gamecocks for years. I was a fan before I knew I was a fan. My brother is a fan of them...my other one likes Clemson... My Dad likes them, my Grand-father. Hell, the whole family basically enjoys the Gamecocks. Every year we have high hopes for our team. We get a few good recruits and the returning team never seems too bad. I mean, this past year we could have had one of the best defensive programs in the nation. As for the Offense, we had multiple running backs, Stephen Garcia actually had a great year, and it could've been a good year overall.
So what's the problem? As I am, like I said before, a big Carolina fan, I've gone through the emotional roller coaster that every one of us goes through. We take on a nobody team at the beginning and beat them. Afterwards we take on Georgia. After this years game I have to say I was kind of upset. I mean, we had a great game. We scored a lot, we had some good yardage, and we could have won that game. What was the problem? Penalties. I think there were about three TD's that were called back.
Throughout the year we had the games that made us jump and scream, and we had the games that made us fall over and weep. Tennessee was one of those that just utterly killed me. And for some reason, we can come back and take on top notch teams like Florida and Alabama. Yeah, they weren't incredibly close but they were good games that you could watch. To top off the season, we defeated our hated rivals, the Clemson Tigers. And how to we finish afterwards, after we had also beat a then #4 Ole Miss? We get beaten by Connecticut.
What makes us have a season like this? What causes us to be back and forth? Why do we have to go through so much heartbreak watching our team play each season?
1) Attitude- Carolina is a team that, when everything is going their way, they can dominate a team. When a team shows a little bit of fire and a possiblity of a come back, we usually allow that to happen. Carolina loses momentum quickly. Also, it seems that we don't play too well against the small fries, but against the top teams we can go toe-to-toe. What is that about? It drives me insane.
2) Offensive Line- It was a little bit better this year, but not that much. Garcia had, on average, about 2.7 seconds before getting taken out each pass play. The line can never really seem to click long enough to allow the big plays to happen. That's another reason why the running game isn't usually great. The line can fall apart so quickly sometimes that the running backs will be tackled before they can touch the ball.
Yeah, all of this is obvious. I just had to write this, as a fan. I know this isn't the article that a great writer would put out, but I think this is something the average fan would say.
