One of the most gruelling transfer controversy's of the summer effectively ended when Real Madrid's President Ramon Calderon revealed he expected Cristiano Ronaldo to remain a Manchester United player next season.
Cristiano Ronaldo looks increasingly likely to stay at Manchester United for at least one more season after Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon admitted there was no more that could be done to lure the winger to the Bernabeu.
"Today there's nothing happening and therefore this is a situation that may end up as it is now, as nothing, and Cristiano Ronaldo will continue at Manchester United next year."
"At the moment, that's the most likely scenario. They (United) don't want to sell so we can't do anything."
Calderon revealed he hoped Manchester United would change their mind ahead of August's transfer deadline.
"Theoretically there's still time for things to change."
"There are two months left until the end of August but Manchester United have to get in touch with Real Madrid and make us an offer."
"But still we don't know if it would be possible to buy him even if they did want to sell."
Reports in Spain suggested United were set to test Real's resolve by offering Ronaldo for around £80million, nearly £12million more than the £67million Real were reportedly prepared to pay.
Calderon admitted, for a player of Ronaldo's calibre, such sums were not out of the question, but insisted the figure was only speculation as the two clubs had never discussed terms.
"This is speculation which may be reasonable given what has happened in the major transfers in football history."
"But we never got round to talking about amounts of money because Manchester United never gave us the opportunity to do so."
"Ronaldo said that he would like, that it is his dream, that he would be extremely excited to come to play for Real Madrid, but it is a desire of the player that cannot be realised without Manchester United's consent."
In a few days time, it is believed, Manchester United and their fans will be able to say "Phew! It's over."
Ramon Calderon will have a face to face showdown with David Gill where the latter might issue a hands off warning to Real Madrid. If he does, it will be "the end" of the Ronaldo saga.

Isn`t it obvious that after the Euros he`s just not worth it anymore.
I saw this coming weeks ago.

Do you think real don't want him anymore? I think its more a case of they can't get him.

Well we`ll never know for sure....but let`s just say that before the Euros they (Madrid) were going flat out for him....whereas now it`s like- ` we`re waiting for an offer from ManU`.
I sense a change of heart in Madrid.

I agree with what you are saying S, but I don't know if it was as much the Euros as this saga was taking away from the club accomplishing anything else.
While Ronaldo did not perform well for Portugal, Madrid would not buy him for his skill with his national side. There is still no denying his incredible skill and ability for a domestic side and that would be what Madrid would pay for.

I'll make it brief: Calderon is playing mind games, just like he's always done. It's not over until everybody says it's over. You'll know, but not from Calderon's lips.

Very true you'll only know he isn't going to madrid if on september 1st he is still a manchester united player either that or ronaldo says he's not going and I can't see that happening.

Hello from Spain.
In my opinion, the las chapter of this book has not been written. I take Calderón words as an strattegy. They want a clear an real step forward from Ronaldo showing his intentions.
Nevertheless, I don't know what to expect from Calderón. He is not Florentino Perez, who was a master signing star players.
Here, the media still believe (or sell) that Ronaldo will be playing for Real Madrid in september.
As a conclussion: don't take Calderon declarations as a truth.

No offense, but I hope this isn't true. Ronaldo doesn't really wanna be on Man U, so they should let him go!

What is left for Cristiano Ronaldo to accomplish with Manchester United?
Somebody please answer that.
Champions League: done.
Premier League: done.
Top scorer in the EPL: done.
FIFA Player of the Year: done.
And not to mention he is the 5th highest paid footballer in the world only behind Beckham, Ronaldinho, Henry and Ronaldo.
He hasn't "requested a trade", but who really believes that he does not want to leave the EPL for more money, more fame, a new beginning.
And not to mention those spanish women.
Even after having surgery on that ankle today, I don't think it's all over quite yet. There is still some time left for things to fall into place. And once he returns from Amsterdam, I'm guessing he'll pick up the phone and get things going.
It's just too bad it's not Barca.

By that logic maldini should have left ac milan, giggs should have left manchester united and raul should have left real madrid. The three of the most sucessful players in club football.

Without looking up any of the accomplishments and ages of those players, I'm going to venture out and guess that none of them were as young as Cristiano Ronaldo. And I'm pretty sure none of them won FIFA Player of the Year, top goal scorer in their domestic league, a Champions League title and a
domestic league title all in the same year. I could be wrong, but it seems to me that Ronaldo has accomplished so much so soon that he has enough time left to do the same in a different league.
And I think he wants to.
