Bracketeering Number 10: Last One Before Mini-Tourney Time
Since none of the top three teams in the polls survived the weekend intact (though Robbie Hummel probably would've made a difference against Michigan State) the big Orange snag the overall number 1 seed. Trouble is, they can't play in the East since they're hosting the regional, so they get to go the Midwest. Duke, Kentucky and Kansas round out the top seeds.
One team that needs a miracle but could end up a top seed is a team that the college hoops braintrust never could've predicted would be this good - New Mexico. Their conference is sending four teams to the Dance in this week's edition and that has a good chance of actually happening in thirteen days. Of course, they would need all the top seeds to stumble and some of them would need to lose twice. The Lobos would also have to win the Mountain West tourney in Las Vegas. But stranger things have happened.
The excitement really cranks up this week. Conference tourneys start tomorrow and Cornell can once again clinch the first Dance invitation with a win on Friday.
ACC - 7, Big East - 7, Big 12 - 7, SEC - 5, Atlantic 10 - 5, Big Ten - 4, Mountain West - 4, Conference USA - 2, West Coast - 2, Pac 10 -2.
Four teams that will root like crazy for Northern Iowa, Butler and Gonzaga:
Virginia Tech, Arizona State, San Diego State and Dayton.
Four teams that will also do the above but might still need to win their conference tournament:
Memphis, Notre Dame, Illinois and St. Louis.
Starting Monday, bracketeering will appear daily until Sunday.
