In the history of the NHL there have been teams that had all the tools in place to win the Stanley cup! But somehow ended up failing.

I have put together a list of five teams that I feel should have won Hockeys biggest prize but didn't.

 5. The Philadelphia Flyers 1975-76   51 wins 13 losses 16 ties good for 118 points and a .738 winning percentage. The Broad st bullies as they were known had won the previous two cups and were geared to make it three in a row.

What happened? Well the Montreal Canadiens happened! Even with returning stars like Bobby Clarke, Dave Schultz, and Bernie Parant the Flyers were no match for this juggernaut from up north. Result- Flyers lose to the Canadiens in the finals 4 games to 0. Key players Clarke,Bill Barber,Reggie Leech,Rick Mclish, and Parant.

 4. The NewYork Islanders 1978-79  51 wins 15 losses 14 ties 116 points and a .725 winning percentage. The Islanders had been steadily building their franchise with the draft and it looked like they were finally going to get the cup!

What Happened? The Islanders lost in the semi''s to the Rangers 4 games to 2. The Islanders would learn from this and go on to win the next four cups leaving their own mark in Hockey history! Key players Bryan Trottier, Mike Bossy,Denis Potvin, and Glenn Resch.

3.The Edmonton Oilers 1985-86  56 wins 17 losses 7 ties 119 points for a .744 winning percentage. The Oilers had perhaps one of the greatest lineups in Hockey history! With the likes of Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, and Paul Coffey. Edmonton had just won the last two cups there was no reason to think they wouldn't win their third straight.

What happened? They lost in the Division finals against the Calgery Flames 4 games to 3. The Oilers would recover and win the next two cups. Key player Gretzky,Messier,Jari Kuri,Coffey, and Grant Fuhr.

2.The Detroit Red Wings 1995-96 62 wins 13 losses 7 ties 131 points for a .799 winning percentage. After breezing to the best Record in the NHL Detroit was the odds on favorite to win the cup.

What happened? The Red Wings ran out of gas! losing in the Confrence finals to the eventual champs the Colorado Avalanche 4 games to 2. The Red Wings would go on to win the next two cups cementing their place in Hockey history. Key players Steve Yzerman,Sergei Fedorov,Paul coffey, and Cris Osgood.

 1. The Montreal Canadiens 1974-75 47 wins 14 losses 19 ties 113 points and a .706 winning percentage. Now I know their record was not the best but it's more what the Habs were about to do that makes them number 1.

What Happened? The Buffalo Sabres beat them 4 games to 2 in the semi finals on their way to eventually losing in the finals. The Canadiens would reach the finals the next season and this time there was no stopping them as they would capture the first of four straight cups. Key players Guy Lafleur,Pete Mahovlich,Jacques Lemaire, and Ken Dryden.

Honorable Mentions  Boston Bruins 1970-71  Canadiens 1979-80  Islanders 1983-84 and the Flyers 1979-80.

There you have it! The five teams who should have won the Stanley cup! But didn't.
