How to Look Smart and Stupid in Less Than 24 hrs? Ask Darryl Sutter

Steve McSweenJul 5, 2008

At the NHL's 2008 entry draft I asked could the real Darryl Sutter please step up.

Well he did just that, as he flipped the 17th overall pick to the Los Angeles Kings for a speedy, goal scoring winger in Mike Cammalleri.

I thought to myself, "wow, Darryl has finally realized how to build a team suited for the new NHL."

That thought lasted about an hour before Sutter showed me he is not suited for a front office job, and he should be behind the bench instead as he parted ways with Alex Tanguay for Montreal's 25th pick and a second round pick in 2009.

Sure Tanguay only had 58 points last season, but he was one of the few Flames that could actually create on any given night, and was 5th overall in team scoring.

So he was making $5.2 million, hasn't Sutter seen the papers, that kind of production is worth $5 mill now-a-days.

The fact is Tanguay would have popped in a few more if he was playing with some decent line mates, when you look down the Flames roster after the big three up front in Iginla, Langkow and Huselius(whom they also lost), there is a serious drop off in talent with Matthew Lombardi, Owen Nolan and Craig Conroy all around the 30 point mark.

So to me it is a no brainer Mr. Sutter, you do everything in your power to keep Alex Tanguay, and add Mike Cammalleri. At least then you may have two thirds of a second line finally.

If it is cost that you are concerned about why not dump one of your 6 defencemen tying up $23 million in cap space, I mean I thought Kipper was an elite goaltender?

It is really hard to rip on the man that brought this team back from the dead. Heck, they should have won a cup in 2004, but it ain't 2004 any longer Darryl and I for one am really sick of the Flames finishing in 8th spot in the West only to be knocked out of the playoffs in the first round.

You have the best captain in the league in Jarome Iginla, along with one of the top defencemen in the league in Dion Phaneuf. If Kiprusoff can get it back together next season it will only take a few more additions to get this team over the hump.

There are not many UFA's left, so it doesn't look like Sutter will be making a splash anytime soon, unless he pulls Mats Sundin out of his arse. I would like to see a guy like Jason Williams who had 13 goals and 23 assists in 43 games for the Blackhawks this season or a miracle signing of Peter Forsberg happen, but it's not likely.

I guess it's a long summer, but Darryl if your going to throw more money at Owen Nolan than ya might as well give Theoren Fleury a shot as well, 'cause im pretty sure he'd score just as many empty net goals for ya, and the fans love him.

If not, well I'll be cheering again next season, and happy when I run into Iggy on the golf course up at Predator Ridge once again at the end of April.

Nuff said!
