Inter scored early through Milito before conceding possession throughout most of the first half to Chelsea. Kalou scored for the Londoners early in the second term when Inter keeper Cesar reacted poorly to his slotted in-swinger. However, the Nerazurri responded almost immediately when Cambiasso fired from the edge of the area past a helpless Cech. The fixture ended 2-1, but with the away goal for Chelsea, the tie remains up for grabs at the return leg in a fortnight's time.

Chelsea

Cech (5.5) Conceded two and otherwise had few saves to make.

Ivanovic (7.5) Strode forward to setup Chelsea's only goal. Made other similar runs with effect. Very balanced defender; can go forwards and backwards well.

Terry (6) Assured under threat from Inter's revolving door of attacking talent. Never appeared troubled, except when Milito skinned him for the opener.

Carvalho (7) Quiet game, but for a defender, maybe that's a good thing. Inter scored twice but didn't have many other notable chances throughout the 90 minutes, in part to Carvalho.

Malouda (5) Didn't get forward as much as he could have. Got skinned by Balotelli more than a few times.

Mikel (5.5) Completely invisible throughout much of the match. Contributed nicely to build Chelsea's only goal, though, but otherwise just passed sideways safely when he managed to gain possession.

Lampard (6) Not audacious enough going forward. Helped contain Inter's midfield and organize possession for Chelsea, but still ended up on the losing side.

Ballack (6) Largely unaware of his options, the big German played creative passes poorly and didn't stamp great authority on the game.

Kalou (6.5) Fortunate to get on the score-sheet. Able to beat Inter's defense on a couple occasions. Still shows naivete.

Drogba (7) Struck the post with a cracking free-kick. Met his match against the game Lucio. Tested him, but couldn't find the net. Should be disappointed with his service today.

Anelka (6.5) Slotting behind Drogba, Anelka saw more of the ball but was unable to penetrate past Zanetti or any other Inter player.

Subs:

Hilario (Came in for Cech, didn't concede)

Sturridge (Talented English youngster, couldn't effect the game in his finite tenure)

Inter Milan

Cesar (7) Howled Kalou's shot but made some veritable saves otherwise. Sporting two shiners earned another half-point to his individual rating.

Maicon (6.5) Got forward when his teammates found him, which should have been more. Didn't make any great mistakes on defense. Fantastic engine, pace, and strength. Quiet game, though, from the classy right-back.

Samuel (6) Didn't have his name called too much. He basically fouled Kalou in the box but the Ivorian went down comically and the referee was too far away.

Lucio (9.5) Plenty of European experience and it showed. The only person not named Vidic who can utterly contain Drogba willingly. Extremely confident on the ball or the back foot. Outstanding.

Cambiasso (8) Slotting in front of the back four, the former Real Madrid tackler sharpened steel with steel against Chelsea's forward players. Tenacious, he scored with a well-stuck drive from 17 yards out. Oozed maturity.

Zanetti (7.5) The last time Javier Zanetti had a bad game was in 1985. He's so good, he can't play bad. To be fair, he didn't dominate the game, but he certainly dominated his space.

Sneijder (8.5) The nucleus of the side going forward. Plays like Paul Scholes circa 1997. Pinged balls long and close, fired from range, and curled in free-kicks menacingly. Inter's inability to get him the ball to quarterback all their attacks was a definite oversight.

Motta (5.5) Unassuming display before being subbed.

Stankovic (6.5) Didn't show much attacking vim today but handled his defensive duties against a robust English side.

Milito (6.5) Did virtually nothing positive besides scoring in the third minute.

Eto'o (6) Off-form over the last few fortnights. The trend continued today. Had some opportunities to show the class bubbling beneath, but it never boiled over. Subbed.

Subs:

Baloteli (Tricky)

Pandev (Neither here nor there)

Muntari (Arrived late)
