After an exciting end to last weekend’s Daytona 500, the Auto Club 500 wasn’t able to follow in their footsteps. But it did have a few exciting moments when rain threatened, and then came down, to halt the race for a few laps.

Teams began playing the rain game and the lead changed hands three times before the race was restarted. Denny Hamlin had it when it started to rain before having to pit for fuel, then Scott Speed inherited the lead before pitting for fuel, and Jeff Burton took the top spot as the race saw the green flag again.

Others would say that California was as always, intense for engine builders. With the laps winding down engines started to go down. First on Martin Truex Jr., then Juan Pablo Montoya, Ryan Newman followed him, and even Jeff Gordon developed a problem. He was however, able to limp around and finish the race.

With under 50 laps to go Jimmie Johnson caught a break on pit road, which gave him the lead on the track, and he checked out for his 48th career win at his home track. He did so by holding off the rebounding Richard Childress Racing cars of Kevin Harvick and Jeff Burton, who gave Johnson all they had in the final laps.

The final laps also saw our Creatures’ picks move up and down the leader board. One pick rose to the top while others who had been so strong early in the race, just tried to finish in a decent position.

Then when all was said and done, for the second week in a row our Creatures picked the winning driver.

In doing so they’ve started the year right in collecting ten bonus points for winning which will come in handy when the Chase begins. That however, isn’t until September, so for right now let’s look at how they’ll rank once the Sprint Cup Series hits Las Vegas next weekend.
